New Shocks & What Else?

Featured Replies

Evening all!

Got a pair of new front shockers on their way as one of the fronts are leaking and got a metallic knocking as i drive over a bump which appears to be coming from the the leaky drivers side shocker.

Im going to fit them with new lower pinch bolts and top mounts while im there, Ive got a not-so-quick question....................

Ive got a bit of steering wheel wobble between 65-75mph and wondered if the new shocks would sort this or should i be looking to replace both lower arms complete with bushes while im there or is there likely to be another cause. Ive had a new set of wheels and tyres on there and the wobble is still there so i know its not the wheels. Is there anything else to consider replacing which is likely to require attention? Its all coming apart so I may as well do it all in one hit.

Steering wheel wobble?

Is it at higher speeds only?

my sisters Micra had steering wheel wobble at speeds of 60mph but then this year the vibrations started to get worse at lower speeds. Got new tyres and no virations now.

If the shockers are leaking get them sorted first and check the front suspension lower spring cups

Had this problem on my other car. The tyres were good so got them rebalanced.

This seem to cure the wheel wobble a little but it was still there.

Any had new tyres 2 months ago and now the wobble has completely gone.

Went to a different fitters the 2nd time so either there equipement was naff or they don't know how to use it properly, or one or more tyres were out of shape.

As your changing the shocks it may well be them that's at fault.

BTW good luck at removing them lower pinch bolts, they can be a pig to get free, loads of Plus gas needed there I found to ease them free.

Check the front tyre pressures. I think when this happened to me the tyre pressures were a little too high.

This was the first thing i checked.

I'd change the dampers and see if that sorts it before doing anything else.

After that, how worn are the front tyres, because I'd suspect either worn tyres (particularly if it's worse under braking) or ball joints.

Tyres are brand spanking new.

The tyres might be new but are they balanced? and check the wheel nuts.

If you have steering wheel wobble then most prob the wheel bearings. Give them a check if you havent done so already.
