GPS Camera Thingy

Featured Replies

Can someone recommend me one? I don't really need a sat nav (because I am a man and can therefore read a map :sofahide::P:D).

I just want something that will warm me of as many camera sites as possible, give me an accurate speed reading and not require a PhD in Computer Electronics to operate (and not cost the earth).

I was thinking of something from Talex or Novus. I also quite like the look of the new road angel professional but my ex boss had a road angel satnav/camera gps and it was worse than useless.

If there is a satnav with a comprehensive camera database then I might consider that but i'm not to bothered.

Any advice/pointers appreciated.

Cheers

We have a Road Angel, and up to press it's been very good, apart from the woman sounding ****ed, and sometimes the indication to 'turn slightly left'....

Cheers. My boss had the Navigator I think. It used to spend alot of its time re-booting or sending you the wrong way and frequently said it had no GPS signal.

I have not really had much experience of recent camera detectors but one thing to consider is the ongoing cost of updates.

The road angel connected is a very good idea in theory as other users would (if they know how to use it) update the system on any mobile cameras that they see while on their travels. How this will translate to practice is anyones guess, probably not very well.

I know you dont want a satnav, BUT the pocketgpsworld user updated database is probably one of the best, if not THE best database around. It is updated once a week and costs £19 a year. BUT if you spot a new camera location before anyone else you get a lifetime membership to the database. I have just obtained this in the last couple of months. I suppose the only thing about having a satnav is that they will need updating too, at least every couple of years as roads change.

If all you need is a good quality safety camera locator that alerts you to fixed and mobile cameras with an opportunity to update other members of the Road Angel community when you see a 'live camera van' then the Road Angel Professional 'Connected' is the best product for you.

If you want a Sat Nav with a good quality camera database and don't want a Road Angel branded Sat Nav then the new TomTom Go 540 Live has the Road Angel database on it and also update camera vans 'live' using its built in sim card.

PS My opinions may be a bit biased though :)

yes ive noticed this on my bosses one, i only ever try it when i know where im going, for some reason from oxford to oasis in swindon it took me around the outskirts of swindon like a moth to a light instead of the quickist and easiest way which was the main drag in.

Nottingham was what used to really confuse it. Lincoln too, where it would send you down one way streets (the wrong way!).

Well I ended up purchasing A Talex. Halfords have them for £99 with 20% off at the moment and you also get a £10 voucher when you spend over £50. So basically you get it for £70. Bargain. I like it's simplicity and the fact that it is a no frills device.

Obviously the first think I did was go and find as many cameras and locations for Scamerati as I could. There was one I KNEW it wouldn't have but as I approached the site it proved me wrong. Updating it online was a doddle too.

So far I am very pleased with it. I'll update after a couple of weeks and let you know how I'm getting on.

I have just stopped my subscription to Road Angel (I won a Compact in Autocar) but as I have bought a TomTom I guess Road Angel will get the money back again. I moved to TomTom as Road Angel kindly sent me a link to the TomTom models. Seemed a little odd though, as I got the TT rather than a Road Angel Sat Nav, on the back of the Road Angel e-mail. It's the 940 Live

I can say your data base is excellent in my experience however:thumbup:

glad you are pleased with it, if you find the blue lights a bit to bright at night then use a bit of black electrical tape and half cover up the bulb by sticking it over the display where they glow, got mine done so i can still see it in the daytime and doesnt dazzle me at night..

So that will be the whole back window blacked out then......

Sorry, just posting what others will be thinking :)

Have to say the blue lights don't really bother me. What is a pain though is that the green digits reflect off the windscreen (at night). It's like I have got a head up display, which would be quite cool were it not for the fact that it is mirror image. Do you know if there is any sort of hood or cover that goes over the display? Need something a bit better than the post-it note I have at the moment.

Cheers

i guess it depends where you stick it on windscreen, cant say i notice that happening (mine is same place as the likes of chris, steve and stu to name a few have theirs).

@vrslen i know what you mean, if i remember i will post a pic of it at the weekend, its hard to explain but what ive done means you cant see the tape easily. i guess its 4mm high by probably the same and covers 60% of the area the blue led shines out of and the same on the other blue led area.

Well I found a site this afternoon with a scamerati van which the Talex didn't warn me about. It was waiting at the bottom of a steep slope just as you come off a 60 into a 30.

Just emailed Talex about it.

there's your free subs mate  im always chuffed if i can find a location which is so so difficult these days with the talex device.

The new TomToms have a feature where you press a button to log a camera and after the site has had a confirmation, all similar TomToms are updated as to the location within 3 minutes. Live Scamera positions, pretty cool I think.

I have used a Road Angel for years but find the GPS can take ages to find the satellites (SERF 2 Chipset). The subscription wasn't exactly cheap either, and online updates took ages.

Now using a Tom TOM and love it. SERF 3 chipset finds satellites in seconds after power up. POI capture great for logging temp cameras and vans etc. I subscribe to Pocket GPS for updates (£19 a year) and I think that is really good value.

You can invert the screen on the Tom Tom Go and use it like a heads up display at night, using the reflection in the windscreen
