Octy 1 vRS noise in 5th Gear ?

Featured Replies

Hi, I have a MK1 Octy vRS with about 50k miles on it. Has been faultless 'till now.

In 5th gear it when you don't accelerate it makes whining noise, sounds like it comes from the gearbox. If you accelerate, even lightly the noise goes away. All other gears are fine.

The noise 'seems' to change pitch with speed.

Anyone have any thougths on what it might be ?

Cheers :-)

Mine does this at around 50mph in 5th. Sounds almost like a milk float :o

Yep that describes it well. I'll get it looked at and post the findings here.

:-( Skoda engineer's just a had a look. They reckon it's the synchromesh or something similar in 5th, it does try and push itself out of 5th when not accelerating.

Options given are

1. have 5th gear repaired about £900,

2. have entire gearbox reconditioned £900 + week without car

3. new gearbox £1650

So time for a lot of research! If anyone has any thoughts or knows any garages that might be able to do this at a better price, let me know !

Thanks.

I know mines a 1.9TDI Mk2 Octavia, but a recon box for mine was around £400. By a independant specialist.

The independant dealer i bought the car from said he would have if fixed, the issue with my box was jumping out of 1st gear on the overrun.

I would look around at independant specialists, and get some prices if i was you.

Thanks Browny I'll do that.

I forgot to mention it's only got 52k on the clock !

Mine does this in 4th when doing around 30-40mph.

Have largely ignored it so far, or just skipped 4th and gone straight for 5th. I'm not aware of it trying to jump out of the gear, just makes a faint whining noise.

My cars done 120,000 miles now! Be interested to know what more you find out!!

It'll get done next week, maybe by an independent but if he can't get a recon it'll go to a dealer and cost :-(

I'll let you know what's found hopefully it'll help anyone with the same problem :-)

Cars in Garage, it turns out to be a bolt/part which holds 5th gear. Now, there's a backlog of orders on the Gearbox oil and the part, possibly for 4 weeks (luckily they've given us a loan car).

If they've run out of the part, this must be a common problem, I'm expecting Skoda to pay part of this as a courtesy. We'll see, I'll update when it happens, could be a while though.

Hi ,

All done now.

Car runs as smooth as silky the silkworms cod piece!

It was a bolt that had worn(?) that holds 5fth in place, Skoda paid 25% and it came to about £550. could have been worse. Just glad to have it back and a 2year warranty on the job and parts.

I tried to get more info about the actual fix, but they didn't want to chat.
