Cost of an investigative inspection under warrnty

Featured Replies

My VRS (56) has a rather odd, slight but noticeable increase in diesel 'clatter' when the clutch is depressed, more noticeable when cold. This has been mentioned on here and people seem to say it is ok and not to worry.

I had it checked last year at 1st service, and again by the supplying dealer in the spring this year. Both times I was told it was nothing to worry about.

Changed job this year and had the car serviced at a different garage, in Coventry. I mentioned it at this service and when it was returned they told me that it would need looking at as they were concerned, along with the BLT stutter and a radio reception problem (both sorted well). They did make me aware that the cost of the investigative work may be up to me to meet in the event that they found the issue was not covered under warranty.

So if there is no fault found, or it is a clutch fault due to wear, I am stuck with labour costs, etc.

To me, this sounds a bit out of order - they are telling me it needs looking at but I may have to foot the investigation costs if it is not a warranty fault? Are these cars supposed to make odd sounds, or do we just accept them? Or should we take a risk, get the work done and pay up if there is not fault found?

I can't risk a big bill, so do I leave it or get it done?

Two other dealers I have been to cannot even hear the change in sound, let alone investigate in the first place. At least this delaer wants to look at it, they think it may be a DMF issue, but are not sure.

Suggestions anyone?

Sounds to me like they're after money for old rope, TBH! The engine note will change to an extent, not only due to the (nominal) change in the load on the engine, but also due to the clutch hydraulics being brought into play. A faulty DMF will manifest itself as vibration under acceleration from low revs, which isn't something you've said your car suffers from...

They are fishing for work. The extra clatter from cold with clutch depressed is normal. What you are hearing will be a combination of DMF rocking on the end stops, and the reduced drag on the engine with the gearbox isolated by the clutch.

No point throwing money at a problem that doesn't exist.

Cheers guys.

No vibes at any revs (at least, not unusual ones) so I don't think it's a problem. It is still audible when the engine is hot by the way.

Its a shame I can't seem to find a GOOD dealer around Brum, at lease on my side of town at least. Might try Savilles next time, they have about the best feedback from what I can see.

Thanks!
