Is it the battery???

Featured Replies

Been having well documented issues with the Enigne management light - EGR/New exhaust/Cleaning inlet pipe. The latter seemed to do the trick - apparently when the mechanic looked at the inlet pipe it was blocked with loads of oily gunk!.

Anyhoo - been fine since (2/3 weeks) Other morning I went to start the car (16V 1.4 comfort) and the battery was just about flat - but it started - just. Took it for a spin and all seemed well. However the engine has developed what can only be described as a panting - the engine seems to 'pant', and when it does the headlights dip. Other than that all seems well - oh and the Fu**ing EGM light is back.

Does anyone think it is worth getting a new battery? Have spent nearly a grand on the car recently - trying to be cautious. any advice greatly recieved.

cheers,

Sam

Possible alternator problem?

Has the ECU been read for fault codes? This should always be the first step with modern cars if you are having problems. Regarding the battery, you can remove it from the vehicle and give it a full charge, then check the voltage one hour after charge complete. If lower than 12.5 volts battery is aged and needs replacing.

Alternatively, take car for a decent run. Switch off engine and measure battery volts, should be close to 12.8 Volts, turn on headlights, voltage should drop to no less than 12.2 Volts.

Alternator check. Measure battery volts at idle speed, should be 13.8 to 14.8 Volts. Repeat with heavy loads such as headlights and heated rear window on, voltage should still be 13.5 to 14.8V
