Octy RS on Ebay...?

Featured Replies

Hello

Can someone take a peek at this ebay link

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2412646484&category=19291

(you may need to be registered with ebay?)

Its an Octavia RS registered march 2002, but has been in a bit of a "shunt" if thats a good word to describe it. I'm curious what anyone reckons it would cost to repair, and what it is really worth in it's current state

I want as many opinions as possible, even though I have no personal interest in it. Cheers :D

Well, never one to shy away from giving my opinion...

It would make a top notch cannibal victim, for the seats,

carpets and everything (including the new style rear light

clusters!)

Would seem a bit of a waste to do that though if it starts up.

The front end does look knackered though, so there might

be some engine damage that has weakened it. I'm also a bit

suspicious about the rear axle - maybe the shell/chassis is bent?

I guess if it was just a case of repairing the wings/bonnet/

radiator/grilles bumpers and and that, I'd say it would cost

about 2k. Bonus with it not being metallic, takes the cost down

a bit. :D

If you popped the steering wheel off and replaced it with an

aftermarket one you would also keep the costs and "technical

charges" down by not having to have an engineer type install

a new air bag.

As is, I wouldn't want to pay more than 2.5-3k for it.

Not that I have a clue what I'm on about...

Impact on the front of the car but a 'bent rear-axel' ? To me that sounds like the whole undelying chassis has taken such a forceful impact that it is beyond repair. The rear body work seems to be in good order though, so maybe some panels can be salvaged from it.

Q.

To me it looks uneconomic to repair, so it's worth what the owner or buyer could get for the engine and interior. If the rear axle is bent as well as the damage to the front end it's been in more than "a bit of a shunt". It needs new wings, bonnet, bumpers, passenger door and lots of straightening and suspension bits. Someone in a back alley will repair it and it'll be sold for good money in the end but I doubt if it'll ever be the same again. A new shell might be an option - don't know what one of those would cost.

And that axle wasn't just bent - It was practically pointing at the ground... I think if I had a spare few grand I'd risk buying it for about 2K, and see what could be done with it. Could you imagine ever trying to sell it again with all that damage in the car's history - I dare not! :D

And the fact that it's been an insurance write-off has to be declared on the V5 by law now ....

You just don't write that in the advert! ;) And it being up to the

buyer to trace this info, they might never find out...apart from

if they look in the V5 as Neil has just pointed out...er...doh!

I'm being flippant though, I wouldn't want something like that

on my conscience!

May sound silly, but would that engine (if undamaged) fit into a Fabia? I bet its a fair bit bigger than any of the regular Fabia engines? If it fitted I may risk buying it for the engine, and then find an X or W reg Fbai out of warranty and do a bit of a swap over...

You can get a 1.9TDi in a Fabia, so I don't see any good reason why it wouldn't fit

in a Fabia, though obviously suspension and that would need to be sorted too.

If you're after the engine alone though, buying a car which has had a tough shunt

to the front seems a bit risky. Especially as the price they're asking you could

probably get the engine new!

..wonder if the sump is in one piece?

:D

How about a group buy?

Sump - Ian

Engine - Jason

Rear brake light clusters - I'll have them...

Silver Dial Trim - Colin

Ha - I'm not seriously interested in the engine though, just having one of those car fantasy things again. Must buy myself a bib to catch the dribble when I do that... :D As you say the front end impact looks bad - makes you wonder what it was doing when it crashed (probably over the speed limit :)

I hope that no-one else with one of those cars suffers the same fate. I think most of us are too young to go to heaven  or hell, yet

Makes me wonder what it hit!

Seeing pictures like this fills me with confidence about the strength

of the Octavia - I think there's a good chance the occupants would've survived

pretty much uninjured. Not sure whether the car would have been cleaned,

but from squinting at the driver's airbags there seems to be no evidence of

blood, which is usually a good sign.

Anyway, it's getting morbid now! :(

I think Skoda did quite well in those recent EU crash tests - I think it got four stars out of five overall, although it scored (like most cars did) zero stars for hitting pedestrians, but if they're stupid enough to walk in front of your car they deserve everything they get. I'm a believer in Darwinian theory that the strongest and fittest (and the most sensible people who don't jaywalk) will survive longer

I don't have much faith in the EU crash tests - it's the sort of thing where they'll knock

points off a car's safety for lack of side airbags and that. Now, if a truck t-bones you,

is a small air-filled bag really going to do anything useful?

Even Volvo reckon the ratings are misleading, and they know a thing or two about

making safe cars!

I think making something large and out of metal is by it's very nature going to

be dangerous to pedestrians, so I don't know how far they realistically expect

to take it...

Rob.

Agreed, but if I have the choice of airbags between me and that truck, and no airbags, I'll take the airbags!!

:D

Well I got some interest here, didn't I? - 16 posts within two hours. However the driver came to crash the Skoda like he/she did, I bet it was a proper :dung: in the pants moment. I like the group buy idea. maybe someone could make use of the wheels, although I wonder what state the wheel's in that was attached to that bent rear axle

I'd rather have some of that foam stuff like the cars in Demolition Man had... :D

The wheels probably would be alright, though the tyres might be a bit torn. I notice

they're conspicuous by their absence on the back though!

I think the best Skoda I saw on ebay was a spares/repairs Skoda Favorit. It was only M reg but had suffered a bit of a rear end impact. The bid was only at

Is this the same car that is up on manny's site (Steve B I think)? I - he was on this site having just bought it and said he was going to do it up

If he lives in Dorset it could be. The seller said they had had the accident in the car but it had just run out of MOT and was not worth repairing
