replacing spark plugs

Featured Replies

Hi all

i apologise for the very noob question but i want to learn how to change the spark plugs on my engine. engine code BFQ. i have the correct Denzo Iridum plugs for it but there is a plastic manifold (air intake ) covering access to them. im nervous tampering with this as its bolted to quite a few things ie dip stick, engine block. can anyone offer me some advise on this. i dont want to pay a mechanic to do a simple job but i am not confident. Any help will be greatly apericated.

That engine is horrible to do the plugs on. Pulling the whole manifold is a right pain, but you can just, with long nose pliers & a long thin screwdriver to unhook the cable clips, get the leads off. Then, using 3/8 drive slimline plug socket and a long drive extension with a ball swivel built in, you can just get the plugs out. Blast out the holes of muck with compressed air, a little copper grease on the first half dozen threads of the new plugs and fit the new ones in with a retractable flexible grab tool. Tighten by hand till they stop, then about 1/2 a turn further with the ratchet and they will go 'firm' as the washer has now compressed. Do not overtighten. Re-fit the ignition leads.

Horrible design.

They aint nice to do thats for sure, it is all about practice though.

I use a long nose set of pliers to remove the leads (be careful not to split them though, grab the thin part of the metal sleve that sticks out to the side). Also helps to disconnect the injector plug on 1 and 4 to get a little more room. I put them back in with a uj spark plug socket and extension.
