What a day!! Have I killed my poor Felicia

Featured Replies

:eek::eek::eek:

Was coming home on the m60 and literally a few miles from home the engine loses power.

Pulled up on the hard shoulder, steam billowing from under the bonnet.

Opened the coolant cap. to release all the pressure.

Had 2l oif water but that wasnt enough.

Mnaged to limp it to a filling station and eventually home.

Now when the car starts you need to depress the accelerator pedal as it refuses to idle with loads of white steamy/smokle pouring from the exhaust pipe plus the engine sounds as if it is low on oil.

Will fully examine the levels tomorrow morning but if my Felicia is pretty screwed I might buy a tatty 1.6 to have the engine parts or transplanted.

Oh, bad luck - doesn't sound good:(

remember, we're here to support you :grouphug:

And don't forget to look at the bright side - now's the chance to make use of TeflonTom's hard-won experience and contemplate a 2.0 ;)

Or if not, a well-kept 1.6 shouldn't be too expensive

At a guess - your thermostat failed a while ago, and that destroyed the waterpump when it shot out the back of the housing. Now your headgasket is gone.

A replacement engine shouldn't cost more than around £100 mate. :)

Good luck getting it sorted!!!

It does sound gasketty. I'm worried about the missing lug from SWMBO's failed 'stat body now... :( Hope you can get it sorted easily and quickly, though!

Oh dear! That doesn't sound good!

Sounds gaskety to me too...

Hope u get it sorted. Think like you say your best bet is to find a tatty 1.6 nd have the engine from it!

You guys might be right there :(

Checked under filler cap and theres mayo on there and the dipstick.

**** the Headgasket has most likely gone pop now.

Found a tatty Felicia 1.6 in Leeds. Will see I can get that and then have the engine transferred to mine.

Just wondering if its the same amount just to buy the Head Gasket kit and have the head skimmed etc.....

Get you engine fixed. At least you know the history of it. Buying another engine could

bring more tears at bed time :)

Just spoken with my mechanic.

Looking at at least £300 for a headgasket replacement and about £250 for the engine swap (175 for the engine swapping over, plus servicing thats not includint the price of the donor car.

Looks like my Felly is bye bye now.

You wouldn't be the first to successfully replace a head gasket armed with some tools, no experience, and a source of friendly and helpful advice!

OTOH, what are the chances of the head having warped?

A headgasket would be easy to replace if you know the torque settings.

Well if you can find a suitable engine I know TeflonTom was looking for somebody who wanted a 1.4 conversion from a newer polo.

Personally if it's £300 I'd get your head gasket fixed along with a new water pump, the service, a new stat and a cambelt at the same time.

The cambelt will have to come off anyway so for the cost of the belt £10 well worth it).

Since you'd probably have needed the belt doing anyway, I think it's not expensive and covers the fix, the belt and a service all together.

A headgasket would be easy to replace if you know the torque settings.

I can tell you! You will need new bolts of course, and must tighten them in correct order. If the bolts are numbered from left-to-right and front-to-back (i.e. 1 is closest to you on the left, 5 is closest to you on the right, 6 is furthest away from you on the left, and 10 is furthest away from you on the right), then the tightening order is:

3, 8, 4, 7, 2, 9, 1, 10, 5, 6.

Tighten each bolt in turn first to 40Nm, then tighten each of them to 60Nm, then apply 90deg to each of them, before finally applying another 90deg to them.

HTH

find yourself a VW 1.4 16V :-)

There must be plenty of people on here willing to give a hand, what area are you from? :)

Sorry to hear of this Captain Sisko. :thumbdwn: Hope you get it sorted. Must have been a pain as you had no indicators it was going to happen.

Around the Lancashire area i think (came to a meeting near preston once).

I personally would spend the £300 and get the thing repaired along with belt etc while they're at it.

I'm in Bolton.

It's not £300 exactly to fix. this was a ball park figure from my mechanic.

£55 for the skimming, valve grinding £12 a piece, HG kit itself about £50,

Then there's the engine+rad/water flush, Anti-freeze, oil+filter change, new spark plugs plus the cambelt and waterpump on top and the labour for all that.

Contemplating the engine swap but now just wondering should I just buy a cheap Favorit for the time being.

I need money to get the car fixed, and its money I just can't afford at this moment :(

Hope I win the lottery!!

**edit I did have some warning but before the parts I needed got here the car died.

**** happens

You would only need the valves re grinding if they wasn't seating correctly, and you would notice in terms of performance before the headgasket gave up the ghost.

Should be enough metal left to skim a few thous off of it and not interfier with the valves there selfs, unless something is engine specific that im missing out on?

My mk3 1.6 16v astra blew the headgasket from the water and oil jackets aswell as between two cylinders.

Cost me around £200-£250 to repair, and best of all, no grinding to the valves.

And new spark plugs?

I wouldnt have thought they would have been ruined by the gasket going, may need cleaning up. Again my Astra never had them changed after being done.

Do you know the mechanic personally?

I think you could shave a few items off of the list that arn't needed.

Ring round and get a few quotes matey.

I'd be inclinded to change the plugs because they don't like getting wet or being cooked, but if you're trying to save money, you can try the old set. Just be prepared for misfires and general rough running, which will be cured by new plugs.

I agree with Browny_37 - definitley ring round for some garages for some quotes.

There was a 1.6 felly on ebay the other day for £250. You may be able to get another decent felly for £500 if you have a look on autotrader.

i see you've thought about getting a fav in the meantime. Just do that ;)
