Find rattles you didn't know you had!

Featured Replies

I'm suffering from the infamous passenger door rattle (well, more of a buzz when the stereo is up loud).

I identified a few particular tracks that buzz worst but because the offending bass notes are intermittent in the songs, it's almost useless in giving enough time to start poking bits of trim to find the cause..then I found this:

RealTraps - Test Tone CD

download the zip and write the MP3s to a CD. About 20 tracks, approx 1 minute long, of ascending frequencies. I've just managed to recreate about 5 rattles from one end of the car to another with it. Put a track on repeat and you've got a constant rattle for as long as you need it to find and fix it!

Thanks for that - hopefully it will help track down my door rattle.

SWMBO has been no help at all :)

I Haven't got any rattles at the moment but what a really usefull tool if you do have, i've downloaded it just in case i get any in the future. Thanks for that that could prove very usefull for many people.

I would say, that there are often problems with frequencies above 300 Hz too (in fact reaching as high as 16-20 kHz :P).

Personally, I have made similar test disk using Cool Edit Pro Audio Editor.

You can make every frequency/tone/duration you want.

I have included white/pink/brown noise tracks at different levels also.

If somebody is going to do the same, I would propose adding fade in/fade out of about 1 second to every track.

My rattle is the alarm sensor in the centre above my head.

Thanks gaff - that might be the cause of mine (or at least contributing to it). Don't you have to drill out rivets to get that far into the door though? Not sure I want to do that :S

No drilling just removal of door card, although due to its design you run the risk of breaking the supports on the door card whilst removing it. A couple of people have mentioned its better to do it when warm.

Had exactly the same thing, and just had it sorted. When in for its service, and under warranty, they replaced the rivets holding the passenger door speaker in.

No more buzz! :)

Thanks. I could probably have a go at that if it's noticeably loose - I have a rivet gun. I don't want to do it more than once though so while I've got those doors cards off I'm planning a dynamat / foam / tape / rivets extravaganza! :D

Gaff, you're a genious. Just had the door card off (broke a few clips, of course - more on order :) ) and the rattle was the window motor connector. Strapped it up with a cable tie and some dense foam and it's 100 times better. Thanks!

Good to see my vid has helped someone ;), thats what this place is all about :D

Useful video, but whats with the chav music?

It makes it rattle, so who gives a Toss

Just a thought - whoever thought of putting high powered speakers in door where there is so much stuff to rattle about.

We have the same thing with church organs. We are regularly generating frequencies (often in the 16-32hz range with a 32 foot pedal stop) with pipes or speakers which would have most so called quality stereos curling up their toes. Finding rattles and buzzes in churches is even more difficult!
