TB removal

Featured Replies

Last time I cleaned my TB while still connected to the car, which was fine.

But know I want to remove it and take it inside to clean it in warmth with a cup of tea by my side!

Will unplugging the electrical connector cause me any problems? As I have no means of resetting it. (I only have a VAG code reader/deleter/service reset device)

Basically, if you disconnect it from the car, will it lose settings and spaz out?!

I will be very careful not to move the valve anyway, and obviously will not turn on the ignition with it disconnected!

I have everything else i need like carb cleaner, a new gasket and a new clip for the evap hose.

Cheers in advance ;)

I "think" it will sortitself out after a few miles.....be prepared for running like a badgers **** though.

it should run on the backup (**** running) safety mode.

Where the car knows it can make so much power after the unplug, but not running at max available power, untill reset.

It will re-calibrate itself.

You are fine to unplug it.

where did you get the new gasket from? I tried gsf but they didnt have any

Any vag dealer.

HTH

All Skoda dealers have them for about 75p

Yup, my local Skoda garage. Only a few pennies.

You're welcome mate.

As said, get the gasket from your local Skoda dealer too!

have fun :)

You won't have a problem unplugging it, but I would have thought it would be better to find a local VCDS owner who would be willing to reset the valve...That way you could move it (carefully) and give it a more thorough clean.

I never re-set my throttle body. It does it itself.

I remember someone posting that you can remove a fuse that does an ECU reset and recalibrates the Throttle as well but I cant find it when searching?

Why do I bother?

When the throttle valve is unplugged the engine ECU looses the basic setting for it. This can cause unstable idle and incorrect throttle reaction.

When refitting it really it should be realigned using diagnostic equipment.

Ive never noticed any issues whenever i've done it.

maybe i'm lucky.

I was thinking about the valve position issue when cleaning the other day when I was sorting mine out - does anyone know if the position signal is a simple voltage controlled by the ECU and applied to a pin in the TB connector, or is it switched from a main power supply to the TB. I was wondering if it would be easy to make a buttterfly valve opener from a spare connector and an appropriate battery, and just plug it into a disconnected TB to open the valve for cleaning?

You can move the butterfly by hand anyhow, no need to power it up.

I thought that could stress the servo on DBW units? Or is it just a matter of how you move it?

Cheers for the responses guys. There seems to be a conflict of opinions here, so if I do unplug it I'll just make sure it's in Skoda opening hours, incase I need to go get it reset.

Personally I don't understand why it can't just reset itself, surely it does a sweep and calibration every time you power on. I dunno, electronic actuators are surprisingly complex though I guess...

I need to read up!

Remove fuse number 10 after you have refitted the TB, that is the ECU reset one. Re fit after 5 minutes. I did this last weekend when I fitted a FMIC . I gave the TB a good clean including the pipes to the intercooler. Runs very smooth now.

It will reset after you reconnect it an turn the ignition on for about 1 minute.

It resets enough to run but if you check the readiness codes in the engine management its status will be unset.
