Engine Swap

Featured Replies

Hi, I currently have a 1.6 MPI engined skoda felicia estate. Well it was til the engine died :(. I can't afford to get the current engine repaired so I'm going for the option of replacing it with a used engine from a local scrapy.

The questions I have are;

1.) How high will the front of the car need to be lifted to remove and replace the existing engine?

2.) What are the best positions to place slings around the engine and gearbox to lower the engine?

3.) Any random bits of information/tips etc which I should know about?

Thanks for you help

don't you lift it out ?

Engine comes out the top with a crane.

I was told that you have to lower the engine out along with the transmission which after having a good look seemed to make sense. There seems to be bits of body work and engine mounts? in the way of lifting the whole unit out. Any tips?

unbolt the gear box and lift it out the top using a crane on the lifting eyes.

Thanks for your replies so far.

The plan was to remove the engine complete with gearbox as the replacement will come with its own gearbox.

How much of a job is it to seperate the engine from the gearbox and then to fit another engine to the existing gearbox. I'm assuming this again is done in situ.

Prob the same amount of work as a clutch replacement.

My engines died too the HG has gone pop and I've been quoted 175 for an engine swap not including the cost of the engine, add servicing plus purchasing a donor car = £350+

Might as well get a new clutch if you're fitting a new engine to the current gearbox.

Fair enough, I'll go back to plan A then which is to get a complete engine, clutch, gearbox assembly for £245 and swap the lot over.

That way I'll have a spare gearbox for my car and possibly my wifes felicia, providing that the older 1.4 engined felicias used the same gearbox.

I'll keep the head from my current engine as a spare as well as that was overhauled a few months ago and is still ok.

Is the 1.4 felicia thing a typo as there were only 1.3s, 1.6s and 1.9D s

it's easier to lower the engine out of the bottom with the gearbox and driveshafts still attached, don't bother taking out the engine and trying to leave the gearbox in becasue it's an absolute **** trying to line the clutch back up afterwards and there's limited space to move in

sorry that was a typo, my wifes skoda is a 1.3 felicia N reg. Do the older type 1.3 engines have the same gearbox as the newer 1.6 MPI engines?

yeah kind of, it's the same casing but there are various different gear ratio combinations, other than that they will interchange easily. the only difference on the 1600 model is that there is a 2cm thick cast iron adaptor plate bolted to the engine block to allow the skoda box to fit on the vw engine

So in theory I could use the gearbox from a 1.6 on a 1.3 and the car would still be perfectly driveable?

Whilst the engine, gearbox and driveshafts are out if there any other jobs which would be worth carrying out when there is plenty of room under the bonnet?

So I could use my clutch from my Felicia in the Favorit too?

I might be able to port the steeing wheel too!!!!

the clutch and flywheel are a matched set and are specific to the engine capacity, the 1.6 flywheel wont fit a 1.3 because the bolt pattern is different

Well thats one thing crossed off the scavenging list!!!!!

might be worth breaking it for spares on ebay

Was that a yes or a no? Could I use the gearbox from a 1.6 on a 1.3 and the car still be perfectly driveable?

yes but you wont be able to acselerate as fast. and as the 1.3 isnt to quick, i'd stick to a 1.3 box
