Topped up with wrong oil

Featured Replies

Hi there this is my first post, I have an Octavia 4x4 FSi 07 plate, tonight my wife told me the oil light came on so she put a litre of oil in the car, unfortunately she just bought the cheapest available 15w/30 I think instead of 5w/30, should I get the oil changed, or not.

Service and oil change not due until June 2009

You are permitted to use a litre of 'incorrect' oil inbetween services so i wouldnt panic.

Might be a good time to give her a list of things for the car - like makes/names of oil . Mind you ,if you live in the place you're name suggests - there's only a few places like Hawco where you'd get the oil .

Put a litre of the correct top up oil in one of the side panels in the boot, then you know the right stuff is going to be used.

15w is very likely to be mineral, not synthetic. It is also less likely to withstand the temps inside a modern engine.

Change the engine oil asap and use an approved engine flush in between this and the new oil.

If he lives where I think he lives - a short trip by mrs fort bill to the local VW place will suffice- the blokes on reception will sort her out with the right bits

Welcome aboard. Lots of useful info here, and some friendly helpful people too :)

If it was my car I'd be changing it now. 1 litre is a fair proportion of the total oil and it is a long time to when it is due for a change. As suggested by others, carry a spare litre of "the right stuff" for future use.

Might I also suggest checking the oil level a tad more often ? 1 litre is a lot to add in one hit, so presumably it has been low for a while. Unless it has been used for short runs a lot, then you have suddenly done a fast highway run - condensates can build up from the short runs/cold engine, then when you do continuous high speeds these condensates suddenly get burnt off, leaving the oil level low.

One litre of 15W/30 is not going to be a problem. As Ross (Lummox) said, it is assumed that there may be times when you can't get the recommended oil.

Half way through a fixed service period, I would do nothing and wait for the next service in June.

I would check that this was the first time this has happened and I wouldn't do it again. Two litres would be too much.

Skoda often give away a velcro mounted, zip-up pouch that holds a litre bottle of oil. Ask for one when you go into the dealer to buy a litre of oil.

15w is most likely mineral, and mineral = sludge deposit.

It's been a major problem on, for example, the Audi 1.8T engine until they switched to synthetic on the US market.

try not to be too hard on her, domestic violence at this time of year normally peaks. :):)

In keeping with the theme, I just found out the Octi is wife proofed in one aspect. If the engine is running and you turn the key in the ignition again nothing happens. Good thing if it's not a diesel and the car is already idling away quietly.

So the car is 5 months old & has used 1 litre?

I wouldn't worry. Just keep topping up with the correct oil in the future. There will be enough "additive pack" from the old oil to keep things running OK.

Just out of interest, was 1L enough to bring it to full?

I think your wife did well. Most would keep driving & let "hubby" fix it.

Unclear from the original post if she seen light and just went ahead and put 1L in, best to check dip stick first to see exactly where the level is at. My light came on one day when it was Half way between min and max, adding 1L to that would have been too much.
