Blown Exhaust???

Featured Replies

Has anyone ever had any problems with either a blown exhaust or downpipes on a octy vrs tdi 170bhp? Mine has only done 3500 miles but im sure i can hear something along the lines of the affromentioned problem.

A know if im worried i should take it to the dealer but the fact is that the car is only a year old this month and has only done 3500miles!

Any replies with any theories would be appreciated guys and girls!

Welcome to Briskoda. Lots of useful info and very helpful people here.

Maybe if you can describe your symptoms with specific details someone will be able to give you some meaningful responses ?

Get the dealer to check it out, it could be that the exhaust has cracked.

Having only covered 3500 k in 12 months it may have rotted.

Mine sometimes makes a noise not dissimilar to that of a blowing exhaust - I think it is the DPF under going some cleaning process. It stops after 5-10 mins and doesnt do it again for days/weeks.

Im afraid I dont know whether this is in any way related to your problem though. I do about 16K per year.

At one year old with only 3,500 miles I would guess you are doing mostly short bumbling around motoring, rather than Motorway cruising. It is therefore likely that you are quickly building up soot in the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and the ECU then kicks in with a 'regeneration' programme.

When this happens, increased fuel is injected into the engine to raise the exhaust gas temperatures and burn off the 'soot'; tickover generally increases to 950-1100rpm instead of the usual 750-800rpm and, more noticeably the engine sounds 'rough' particularly at 1750 - 2500 rpm. This 'regeneration' lasts for 10 - 15 minutes and, having cleared the 'soot' the ECU reverts everything back to normal.

Has your car been to a dealer within the last 6 months? If not; it is likely that you have yet to have the 26E6 campaign installed. This is a remap to the ECU and fitting of an upgraded Exhaust Gas Pressure Sensor, under Warranty naturally. Since having mine done about 4 months ago I have noticed that the 'regeneration' has only kicked in once, whereas with the congested urban driving I do from time to time in NW London, it would kick in every 2 - 3 weeks.

In short; take it to your dealer for a checkover and mention the 26E6 campaign. Good luck.
