Fabia Greenline 1.4Tdi fuel consumption

Featured Replies

Dear all,

I've done 8,800 miles in my Fabia Greenline 1.4Tdi and get an average of approx 60 mpg. Now we're in a coldsnap of winter it seems to have dropped a bit to about 57mpg. This seems low compared to the stated mileage in the brochure.

I went to my local dealer today and they said they can put it throught the diagnostics to see if there is anything wrong but the mechanic didn't seem to have any intelligence in analysing himself other than through what the diagnostics machince says.

Does anyone have any experience in the mpg they have got and what I could do about mine if it should be higher - given that I've not got alot of expectation on the Skoda garage being able to fix it!

thanks,

Neil

Remember in cold weather you have headlights, aircon, rear screen heater, blower, radio etc, all these will reduce your fuel consumption.

Also when starting the engine on a cold morning it will take longer to get to optimal temperature.

Check your tyre pressures as they will also reduce in cold weather.

I personally don't think there is anything wrong with your mpg.

The MPG you're getting is good, and will never be what it says it is in the book unless you drive in the same conditions as in the book (i.e minimal load, temperature controlled and no wind).

As far as I can see, there is nothing to fix :)

I agree with Babs, my Octy 1.9TDi has dropped 2-3 mpg in the last month or so, don't think you have anything to worry about.

I would be happy with 57mpg!

My old Furbie vRS even when driven with baby-feet only managed 40 :(

Well... as lightly I can press with my size 13s lol!

Highly...yes, the blokes are right. You will find nothing wrong with your Greenline. It is completely normal to find an increase in fuel consumption during the winter period. We used to get many owners coming into the workshop complaining about increased fuel consumption at this time of year. Yet, there was never anything wrong with their cars. It's all down to the colder temperatures causing the fuel pumps on both petrol and diesel cars to stay on full advance (rich setting) for longer after startup so you use more fuel. It takes your engine substantially longer to warm up so it doesn't run as efficiently as in the summer during the first few miles. In addition, you will be using your aircon, lights, wipers and blower motor more and probably idling more as winter traffic jams up the streets in our towns and cities. Further, the diesel fuel you buy at this time of the year has a changed formula to prevent waxing in cold weather. This has the effect of lowering your fuel economy slightly. So don't worry about it! We all have the same problem!

MPG look,s good to me much better than my 1,9 td , remember the mpg figure as stated in manual is obtained on a rolling road in laboratory conditions,is not conducive to road and weather condition.s

Temp drop, tyre pressure drop.

You should check them at regular intervals anyway but in the cold you need to make sure they are up as it can really effect fuel burn when added to everything else

As Decron said I'd suggest checking your tyre pressures, but usually your fuel economy does drop slightly, but also don't forgot that you get more fuel in your tank when the diesel is cold as it's volume drops with the temperature.

Dear all, thanks for the comments. I have done my tyre pressures - I was more concerned that the car was significantly below it's stated mpg of mid 70's than it has dropped a few mpg in the winter. However, you all seem to suggest it's a good mpg so I'll re-adjust my expectations!

thanks,

NEil

One more point Highly, your car has a diesel particulate filter (DPF). If you are not regularly giving the car a long fast run on a dual carriageway or motorway (doing at least 70mph or preferably faster, for several miles!) and mainly using it in town and for shorter runs on country roads, the filter will have started to clog up. This WILL reduce your fuel consumption and quite substantially as some owner are finding out. Check your manual about running the vehicle at high speed regularly to make sure your filter is not partially clogged up. It's best not to allow them to clog (dash light comes on to tell you if this happens).

My standard 1.4TDI @ 7700miles is still showing 57.1mpg during the last week of cold weather. It has decreased from 57.9 mpg. I think maybe much / most of your running is under 40mph?

Well... as lightly I can press with my size 13s lol!

You should try size 8's... they can get 40mpg out of an ST.:P:D

I get 60+ overall average fom my tdi80 (including winter), mid 70's on a run if careful - thought this greenline was meant to be better!

I only get that if I am going downhill with a tail wind and the stereo switched off..

You're happy people, cause you have a disel variant at your market! Our one has an atmospher one only!So we don't have so happyness driving our cars!:)I'd be glad to drive turbo engines and turbo engines is better to to remap give us more unforgetable feelings!

I'm looking to forward coming new version of Fabia vRS in Russia!

  • 1 month later...

Our Greenline Estate now has 4,200 miles one it and is doing an average of 67,4mpg thats with a bit of town driving and open roads as well.
