Felicia - electric's problems

Featured Replies

Felicia Estate 1999 1.3 - Head lights, air blower, rear window heater and wipers stopped working altogether. All of the fuses are ok and checked relays. Couldn't figure it out where the problem is. Used to have problems with headlights and discovered that dirty R1 relay was responsible but this doesn't seem to be the case this time. Fuse box is clean. All other electrics are ok. Would appreciate to hear comments.

Only thing I can think is to check the earth to body connection at the left hand side of the engine bay. But if it's anything like mine, the nut holding connection at the engine end is probably seized.

Would also try swapping the relays around to see if that changes what does and doesn't work. Blower, window heater and wipers would point to the cross contact relay - and headlights would point to headlight relay.

Swapped relays R1 (main) and R5 (fuel pump) no change at all. Haven't checked earth to body connection but will try it. Should fuse box have an earth connection as well? Thanks

There's a thick black wire to the fuse box which is a positive feed. Most of the components are connected to earth near to the component at the car bodywork. There are earth connections into the fusebox in the block connector wires, but I think they simply operate the relays.

The relays can also be checked by putting your ear to the fusebox and operating them. So when you turn the ignition switch to the running position there should be a click (cross contact relay), when you turn on the headlights there should be a click, same for rear heated screen (although this will only click if the cross contact one did first).

The relays are working fine as they click and operate the fuel pump but not the headlights (luckily I’ve got two identical relays).

All of the lights except the headlights, horn and the engine works fine. Long beam will flash but will not work on its permanent switch turned on.

Visited my local service 4 times last year and they failed to detect the problem, which was a dirty relay. I don’t want to be in the same position as it cost me money for nothing.

Thanks again

With all of the things controlled by the ignition, not working, i would say either the main ignition switch or the ignition relay is buggerd

Yes, could easily be the ignition switch, or it could possibly be something that did for the turn indicators in my Fav - a broken solder joint on the circuit board that carries the relays. The board is a pig to get out (you have to stand on your head in the passenger footwell and negotiate your arm into an unnatural angle to undo screws) but reflowing all the solder joints takes little enough time if you're used to soldering.

Have you got any kind of test meter? That's your best friend in this kind of situation.

:iagree:

i was thinking ignition switch

Ignition relay works fine. Not realy sure about the ignition switch as everything else works fine. Basically, headlights, wipers, rear window heater and air conditioning (fan) are not working.

I think Richard Black has got some valid points here.

Thanks

a tester would help you big time keep us posted if you find a solution

just because a relay ticks doen't mean is working, maybe the contact is broken and the tick your hearing is from the little magnet touching the contact arm.

blower doesn't have a relay and is the second fuse from left to right i would ckeck the connection in the engine bay, that was the reason mine stopped working so wiggle the connector a bit after applying contact cleaner and see if it works

Thanks for your reply Cepheuz.

I've got two identical relays one for R1 slot (main) and the other one for R5 slot (ignition/fuel pump). Both operate in R5 slot, this is why I thought that relays are ok. I will check the connection in the engine bay. I am presuming that they should be the ones between the engine and dashbord under the bonnet.

Tried all that but still no luck. I'm gonna take it to my local garage tomorrow and see what they will be saying. Sadly, this a really nice car but its annual costs above average to maintain it. Will update you with the outcome.

I wonder if you could tell me what critical things involve in 10000 miles service.

Thanks

car does seem to tear a couple of thing every now and then, but if you have a good friendly mechanic, is not a biggie, plus it gives great miles for the galon and is fun to drive

It was a faulty relay and a dirty connector. Everything is fine now.

Thanks for your support

Which relay and which connector was it ?

I've got the same problems with my '98 Felica

did you ever get a fix for this?
