Acer small notebook advice?

Featured Replies

I've been toying with getting one of these netbooks, my home pc uses linux,

however, when quizzing staff in currys, pcworld & the various phone shops ....

there seems to be no official recognition of linux by mobile internet dongles.

Anyone on here got round this in a not too techie way.

It would be a shame to have to buy a windows machine.

cheers ... Darren

Not sure if this is any use to you, but i have used my Nokia E71 which is on the 3 network with my EEE PC running eeebuntu and it recognises it as a mobile broadband connection when i plug it in and i have used it to surf the net as i have unlimited internet usage on my tariff.

Ideally i would love to be able to run OSX on it as then you get a macbook for a fraction of the cost of a proper one lol.

If you want to run OSX, then you should really be looking at the MSI Wind or one of it's clones (Advent 4211, LG X110, Medion Akoya). I'd say that 99% of the functionality is now working well on the Wind, including sound, graphics acceleration, ethernet, wifi.

Coming in a close second is the NC10, which only lacks ethernet functionality now. Sadly, I don't think that ethernet support will ever come, due to the weird Atheros chipset that Samsung are using.

I'm currently waiting for the NC10 with built in 3G modem, which is due sometime this month. A friend in Germany has one that he got free with a Vodafone contract, and he loves it.

Personally, I'd avoid the LG X110, as the ram is not upgradeable. It's not clear why they removed the DIMM slot, but the 1GB memory is now soldered direct to the motherboard. It's a shame, as this is currently my favourite of the Wind clones. I won't buy one, as some of my apps really need more than 1GB :-(

Bagpuss.

Seems that it can be made to work on the EEE too. With a few minor issues still.

Well in my local 3 shop several of their staff didn't know what linux was!

Then they refered me to a techie chap who said ... "Officially none of our stuff works with linux, but I'm sure someone will of hacked it by now so that it does, but I can't say that!!"

Did some more shopping around, eventually got an Acer Aspire One running Linux.

Typing this on it now, so I guess it works!!

Welcome to the 'Family'!

Aspire One = little package of win. After buying one for SWMBO and spending a bit of time tweaking it I'm tempted to get one for myself.. and I already have access to four other laptops :)

Might be a bit late for most people here but I bought the acer aspire one (1gb 120 gb version) with linux on it.

There are plenty of tutorials on the net on how to install XP on to them (from what I remember you need an XP disk with service pack 2 or 3 slipstreamed into it, then you make a bootable USB stick from it, then install from that). Didn't take too long, probably an afternoon with the install. It's a cute little machine that is great for travelling. I recomend it (mine was 250 in nov from Tesco, think they're cheaper elsewhere now, [see laptops direct / Amazon ]
