Import tax Ireland -They are having a laugh :(

Featured Replies

Well, over the last few days have been looking at a few "Dream" cars, wondering how much I could get one on the road for and such. Always liked Jag's and the idea of a nice big XJ, all that comfort, enough power, fair economy brought me to a nice 2006 Sovereign 2.7 TDVi, at what I think is a steal price of £14,995

A quick check on XE.com tells me thats only €15,908 now :thumbup:. So I log onto the Irish VRT calculator site to see how much the Government will want to extract form my pocket to bring the car here, would anyone like to have a guess :confused:

Go on, think of a number, and I bet you will be wrong

Maybe 1/3 the price of the car - NO

Half the price of the car again - NO

The same price as the car again - NO

This is what they come up with

--------------------------------------

OPEN MARKET SELLING PRICE: €76437

RATE OF TAX: 32%

VEHICLE REGISTRATION TAX:

(payable on enquiry date) €24459

--------------------------------------

AND - if the car has any extra's fitted they will add more VRT on to cover those also :thumbdwn:.

So thats the end of my "dream car dreaming" I think :finger:

Does seem rediculous. Where do they get the OMSP from?

It would cost me £650 to import my 328  and thats worth approx 10p.

There is a lot of people pretty annoyed about the VRT calculations, allowing totally unrealistic open market selling prices on most cars, not just the luxury ones.

If you are serious about a particular car, try getting a franchised dealer to give you a quote on the real value of the car in question as if it was first registered here, and present this to the Revenue Commissioners. It might be difficult to get a Jag dealer to do this for you, but if you see a similar one on Carzone, print the page and send it to them.

Nobody really knows Tom.... They seem to think of a figure, then double it. Then they divide by 0.1, and add an un-specified sum of "good luck" money.

Why not just keep it on GB plates and take a trip North (or does it have to be over teh water?) to MoT it once a year?

Youd then have to insure it on british insurance and drive it on a green card. Its pretty naughty really.

my mate brought in an Audi A4 avant last year and the VRT calculation was huge so he got qoutes from garages and gave it to the revenue, they recalulated the VRT and it came down by a huge amount. He paid about the same money as a base model over here and his UK import was with all the bells and whistles:).....if its not a common car then more often then not the qoute will be huge as they have no figures to go on!!

k:)

the best way to go now is the big diesel the vrt is dirt cheap on them. A nice 530 bm or something like that
