Low oil ???

Featured Replies

Maybe linked too this .....http://briskoda.net/octavia-i/coolant-level-dropped/131359/

Although I hope not :(

Just pulled up now and the oil level light came on. Checked the level and the dipstick showed it was below the marker, so I topped it up withabout 600ml. The coolant level seems stable now and theres no sign of oil in the bottle, just that nice G12 pink colour, nomayo around the filler cap area either.

Question is ....wheres my oil gone ????

It's never used oil before except when I changed from variable too fixed servicing and it needed topping up once after the service and it's been steady asrock until now.

Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, your my only hope:D

If the engine had been breathing heavily, then the missing oil might have gone through the breather system as vapour and filled up your intercooler.

Or it went out of the exhaust, due to worn turbo seals, piston rings or valve seals. Or maybe a breather was blocked, causing increased crank case oil pressure, which would cause over-pressured oil to squirt out of the turbo seals.

Or it went on the floor, from a loose oil filter or sump plug, or leaking rocker cover gasket.

Or maybe the engine just burnt it due to high revs etc.

That's assuming that your water loss is unrelated!

Basically, I have no idea! Is it still losing oil?

Only just topped it up so I shall keep an eye on it.

Nothing on the floor where I park from day to day.

As said in the otherpost car running sweet as a nut tbh.

If it was something serious would I notice anything in normal use eg. missing lack of performance ????

How many miles since the last oil change?

All of Bodge's ideas are good. I'd head for the intercooler pipes first as you haven't said anything about a burning oil smell or oil drips.

Maybe most of the 'missing' oil was never there in the first place.

A neighbour thought he'd damaged something when he did an oil change on his TDI. He'd lost half a litre in 100 miles. We could establish that he got more out than he put back in. It must have been just above the min mark.

7K since the last change, due again in 3k.

A work mate just said the same thing about it not being filled fully at the last change. How much does the AUQ lump hold as iirc when it was filled I had half a litre spare out of a 5L can. That said my mate did tyhe change and he's pretty good like that.

And no theres no smells, smoke or anything fishy going on at all.

Could it be one of those things like when it happened before ???..............You know spooky like !!!

IIRC, all the 1.8 engines hold 4.5 litres so that would be about right (assuming new 5l bottle).

600ml in 7K is not that bad. Unless you measure the oil in and out you wouldn't really know if you had been using some oil. You could have lost 500ml in 10K without the light coming on.

Another place to check is the A/C pipe that runs near the oil filter. That tends to catch oil drips from the filter. You may lose a few drips each journey when the engine is hot so you wouldn't expect to see oil drips on the ground.

Pop the drivers side wheel off, remove the arch liner and disconnect the pipe from the bottom of the intercooler. There might be a lot of oil built up in there, from the CCV system. Had you been checking your oil level every so often before this? Did the level go down over time?

I'm usually quite good at checking the oil. It was 4.5l put in as my mate has a much better memory than me and told me what we did and how much was left over when we finished.

The dipstick level usually never moves a noticeable amount between services.

I'll just monitor the situation I suppose ,

Cheers too all those posted, I'll update this when something breaks I guess

I have had the same problems in the past.

I have the booklet in the service pack somewhere, which says the oil consumption it has over so many Km's. I thought it was quite high? I will dig it out tomorrow in the daylight. (it's in the car)

I am paranoid with every longish journey - an check it before I leave. I suppose that's good practice anyway. Will get back on what it says in booklet

Don't forget to give the oil time to run back to the sump before checking the level! And park on a level surface too.

I did an oil change in my 1.9 TDI BJB Engine within the first 2-3k i lost half a litre. Topped it up and in the remaining 3.5k the oil level hasn't budged.

Unless you can see any heavy blue smoke pouring out of the exhaust on acceleration or the overrun, i wouldn't worry too much. And just keep an eye on the level.
