Does anyone keep fish ?

Im getting a new tank after christmas and wanted to know what other people have got ?

pics would be great :D

Im thinking of getting in to marine fish and have looked at a red sea max and they look good for the marine starter but I have read they can be unreliable ?

Another tank is the fluval vicenza 180 which I could convert to marine :)

If anyone has any advice or knows anyone with marine fish or other types of fish then any advice is greatly appreciated :D

Thanks

Richard

Keep them - well yes - got some plaice , salmon ,bit of trout , bit of cod and a few kippers - all in the freezer . Found that if they're not in the freezer ,they tend to pong a bit - unless you lay them down in salt .:D:D

Mind you - that's not a bad idea -keeping them in a tank till needed - but then ,mrs gets upset when she'sfed them for months :D

I've kept tropical fish for many years and currently have a Juwel Delta aquarium. Fairy reasonable tanks, only weak point being the lighting units which can fail and then cost around £50 to replace.

I think it would be a good idea to get a couple of books about marine fish keeping to help you decide on the best set up for you. Also speak to your local aquarium shop as they should have a wealth of knowledge and experience. Research is essential as if you get it wrong with the marine stuff, it can be very expensive!

When choosing a tank try and go as large as you can because it's actually harder to maintain good water quality in a small aquarium.

Hope this helps.

If you've never kept fish before then I personally wouldn't recommend going straight into the marine stuff as they can be quite difficult to care for and very expensive mistakes could occur. Probably best to start with the tropicals and see how you get on and then later on looking into the marine set ups.

Thanks for the info :)

I have kept coldwater fish for a couple of years now and with moving out I have decided to get a new tank as a main feature as above (red sea max or vicenza 180) and Im just doing research into marines to see whats involved :)

Tropicals would be alot easier but, the colours of marine fish and the corals is just sooo more tempting :D

I keep tropical fish (15 years) and have looked into Marines, I decided against marine in the end because of the cost involved. You can get very colourful Tropical fish :D

If you do decide to go for Marine, I would do alot of research before buying anything and get to know your local Marine specialist. Hope that helps a little :)

I've kept tropicals for a couple of years & have considered marines a couple of times. As with all tanks, the bigger they are, the more likely you are to get away with any mistakes. Marine always seems far too expensive / time consuming to me. Protein skimmers, salinity monitoring, requirement for RO (reverse osmosis water) & the fact that normal tropical kit doesn't like salt means I've tended to avoid it.

Have a look at doing a (malawi) cichlid tank. Extremely colourful, lively, overstocking isn't a problem (as long as your filtration is up to it) and a very, very nice alternative to marines. Good fish shops will normally have a cichlid tank on display - well worth a look. This will be my next set up.

Edited to say: P.S. It's not like I shy away from high tech tanks. On mine I've got UV sterilising (as a back stop against disease), external filtration, and CO2 for plant growth. It's a Juwel 180L tank.
