Wont start when warm? paper shop sydrome? probable cure!

Featured Replies

Ok My 1.3 MPI felicia has been suffering for the last several years with papershop syndrome, ie you go to the papershop (5 mins away) switch off get paper swith on to pull away - it wont start unless you wait about 5 mins?

I do not really drive to the local paper shop - thsi is justa description of the problem!

It has not bothered me for teh last few years as I have had no reason to switch off in the first 5 mins )only wont restart in 5 forst 5 mins), however recently.........

it wont start from cold but randomly?

..so my friend plugged his diganosis machine into into, it said intermittent fault 02 sensor ( lambda sensor ), on asking my mot man (who is another friend of mine) he advises the lambda can effect hot and cold starts (if the fault is intermittent - which it is) so, I've ordred one and will fit it as soon as it arrives, so if you have any of the above issues try replcing your lambda sensor but be warned to actully unscrew it you'll need to hold a blow torch over the nut and get it well hot!

I know there are ALOT of felicia owners that suffer from paper shop syndrome (especially when buying pertol close to their home when starting off from cold) so I thought I post this to help.

look for coolant sensor over the thermostat housing.

My Favorit is fine and starts all the time

thanks for the useful information Captain Sisko

Please keep us informed after you've fit it TRADESIZE, my son is looking for a cure for this same problem.

to do a quick test, you could just unplug the coolant sensor and see if it fires up

Not sure if this will help but I had a Micra a few years ago and had a similar problem, is the engine turning over but just won't fire? I phoned the AA, he came out and took the fuel pump fuse out, turned the engine over for a few seconds then put the fuse back in and it started straight away...

Like I say don't know if this will help with the cold starts though but may with the papershop syndrome...

I think on the Favorit the coolant sensor for the ECU is on the inlet manifold rather than the thermostat anyway.

how about engine coolant tempreture gauge at dash ? is it working fine ?

if not i'm sure coolant sensor needs inspection. i think it sends information to ECU that engine is cold it needs needs fuel enrichment thus its suffering from overfueling.

My car is currently suffering from this paper shop syndrome. I've replaced the coolant temp sensor ontop of the thermostat, the CPS and the air temp sensor on the inlet manifold.

Would be very interested to see the outcome of the new lambda sensor - might be worth a try on my car!

Captain Sisko - don't see how your comment is relevant, certainly not helpful :thumbdwn:

relevance; HE HAS A BRAND NEW CAR AND HES HAPPY!!! and most of the time he's very supportive and helpful so one in a while it doesn't hurt to just glow

 Bully for him

I wasn't gloating but does this only affect 1,3 units in the Felicia or includes the Favorit.

The only reason I can't help much is cause i'm a n00b on the 1.3 myself.

;)

I imagine it only affects the 1.3 mpi engine but i'm no expert either

to all of those of you who are replacing what sensors you think might be the problem, I would suggest you buy oneof those machines you plug into to the diagnosis port as the basic ones are only about £30 off e bay. I know alot of peeps say bad starting = dodgy crank sensor but at £45 a go you dont want to replace them and guess. my car has had a new crank position sensor as I damaged it whilst doing the clutch, my car has also has a new thermostat housing ans temp sensor. anyway lambda will be herer tomorrow.I'll keep you posted

where's the link :sofahide:

this sounds like an advert for something

I dont think the Felicia has many sensors.

Even the 1.6 had a basic port for a diag computer but its prob not really required.

I know many short stop start journeys isnt good and could flood the engine, maybe this is what is happening here?

Sounds very similar to mine! Will keep an eye out for your results, good luck with it!

Where did you get your diagnostics reader from? As this will most likely be my next purchase

well its done i've travelled 1-2 miles 5 times from cold now and swiched off switches on again no prob so if i was lazy i could now drive to buy my paper and not have to walk home ha ha

also noted dirty earth strap on gearbox which was no doubt not helping with the cold starting but the warm starting issue seemsw

:) to be fine now

My mechanic had a Felicia MPI on his ramps with similar problems to this

Think they changed the crankshaft sensor on it and it running pretty sweet afterwards

Looking like more work needed for my 1.9D - 1998 felicia here,

Starts sometimes from cold, other times only with a jump.

Wont start from hot, has to cool off before it will.

Air blower blowing extremley hot & engine running slightly warmer than it should.

Tapping noise coming from underneath where lower fly wheel is (replaced with one from caddy), belt seems very tight & in good shape, belts all seem to have a vibration on them at idle & very bottom back one seem to hop a little but when brought up to about 1500 RPM the belts tighten and run smooth & the tapping goes away.

Any advice on what the issue is?

I imagine it only affects the 1.3 mpi engine but i'm no expert either

Actually it affects Felicia 1,3 carburettor cars too, and 90% of the time is due to rich mixture or vapor lock, 10% for vacuum leaks.
