Petrol retailer in trouble.

Featured Replies

Heard a juicy story today about a nationwide petrol retailer in a spot of bother with the weights & measures people.

Keep your eyes peeled for a court case

Spill the beans....

I can't, I don't want to get sued

But I wanted to take the chance on the kudos of breaking the news rather than going "oh ya, I knew all along" when its common knowledge :D

I hope its BP. They've been over charging for years and getting away with it, would be nice to see some comeback and justice.

This will be interesting.

Thats what PM's are for ......lol

if its shell will we get loads of money off vouchers to say sorry with

My guess is Total, our local one - right bunch of crooks

It had diesel at 103.9 on the board outside but the pumps still said 108.9

Is it in relation to the amounts(volume) dispensed v's amount charged for?

I would imagine if weights and measures are involved then it will certainly be because their pumps are dispensing "short measures"...

I would have that thought most fuel stations are franchised and therfore the person breaking the law will be the garage owner not the fuel company, but I could be wrong!

i'm off to the beach, some collecting to do

Oh the excitement

You can tell us who its not, nothing wrong with that.

BP?

Total?

Merco?

Tesco?

Morrisons?

Shell?

Golf?

Sainsburys?

Scummerfield?

well least break the list down to 4 so we can play 50/50 and phone a friend

I say it should be Total. One in Guildford is109.9 while the Shell down the road is 98.9 :thumbdwn:

lol you guys.

I was told by someone I've know and trust so I'm taking a punt on it. It might all be hushed up and I turn out to be a rumour monger.

It is to do with over-reading/under-measuring from pumps. Not deliberate but a big enough error to be spotted. Not just a case of a garage charging 2p more than the one down the road. It might be outrageous but its not illegal

Remember the petrol contamination issue at Tesco? Whatever happened there? I thought that would have killed their sales but after the event there seems to have been little follow-up in the media. The retailer concerned will be doing their best to make sure this doesn't get made public.

I give it 6 months or it'll be a non story.

The wierd thing is - All the tanks and pumps are sealed. They are all locked with a "Key" and technically shouldn't be altered.

W&M do random checks so it it's a shame this garage was hit so close to xmas :(

It's spelt "Murco" - Cheers ;)

I would expect it to be one of the 'cheaper' forecourts.

If they are luring customers in with cheaper prices but really selling less fuel than they should be, unless you noticed (like somone has) you're paying more than you think, and they will be making better profit.

I suppose the only REAL way to ensure you are getting the amount you pay for is to fill a meausuring jug and pour into your car.

The accuracy of the pumps is incredible. When I worked at the filling station in Tesco they had a 25l bottle with a very narrow neck that measures accurately to the nearest mm. Everytime I did a check for a disgruntled customer it was bang on, and they were 20+ year old pumps.

As the story goes this isn't a scam, so no tampering, no cheating, nothing faulty.

It was an error/ommission that had a widespread effect.

BBC NEWS | Wales | Checks after petrol pump faults

Fuel pumps at more than 70 Tesco filling stations in the UK had to be checked after thousands of people were overcharged at one petrol garage. Drivers using the Ystrad Mynach store, Caerphilly, received less fuel than they paid for over a nine month period.

The average overcharge amounted to £2 to £3 over nine month and was found after trading standards checks. Court proceedings have now been launched, customers have been offered a refund or can opt for the money to go to charity.

I give it 6 months or it'll be a non story.

How's 3?

Funny that Dai

I was in Pontypridd Tuesday and there was a nice man going round all pumps checking that they were bang on.

I even had a little chat with him and he said that the branch I was in was spot on. He didn't say anything about the others though.

Now I think about it and the chap who told me, it was obvious it was going to be in Central Taff Bandit-land

be interesting to see how many were affected in all.
