my y reg 1.9tdi octavia estate has just done another 10thousand miles and says it needs a service despite it being serviced in June. do I really need to get it serviced now or can i hang off for another few thousand miles?

Fixed service intervals are indeed every 10K, whereas variable servicing which uses totally different oil can go up to 20K.

Just get an oil change service done - not worth spending more at that interval/age of car.

Mine is a similar age (S reg slx tdi) and I do about 22000m a year for the last couple of years I have been stretching the service intervals to 15000m with no adverse effects. I do however change the air filter more frequently as the schedule as I think the 40000m gaps are far too wide for that.
