Petrols Don't Like Winter???

Featured Replies

Can't help noticing, Now we are in the depths of winter, There are very few posts about TDI problems, but everyone who owns a 1.4 8v seems to be having reliability issues, Coolant, thermostats, batteries, and alternators.

Anyone else noticed this?

Maybe diesel engines and auxiliaries built just a bit more tough!

Diesels will always be better in the depths of winter because of the way the engines are designed to work with the type of fuel, kinda to drawn out to explain but I know I prefer to have my diesel then a petrol in winter ;)

The 8v has all those common problems in the summer aswell

The biggest problem with Diesels is the time it takes for the engine to warm up.

I have a Diesel and a Petrol car, my petrol cars heater is hot in under 1 mile, my Fabia TDI takes about 4 miles for heat to come through.

The 1.4 tdi was a more recent engine introduced to the fabia range (instead of the 1.9 sdi?) therefore they will be newer cars than your average 1.4 8v petrol that was in the range from launch.

That might also be a factor why 1.4 8v have more probs than 1.4tdi.

The 1.4mpi engine is decades old... that's why... old skool! I've had no problems (touch wood) with my engine, only the coolant temp sensor in summer last year. I quite like it, feels like a proper engine up front... and the engine itself is bulletproof... just the 1980s wiring...

Another old skool engine fan here too!!! Ive had the cooland temp sensor and the Thermostat Housing replaced but I dont think thats too severe on a car thats coming up to 9 years old!!

Sorry, two petrol family, both TFSI and no problems here....

No real problems here, apart from the loss of about 2 mpg in the cold :)

Aside from the occasionally inaccurate temperature read out, my MPi is fine, all its problems were last summer.
