Overfilling rad expansion tank

Featured Replies

I had a slight in the dark idiot moment :D I have put about an inch too much coolant in my Mrs car (1.4tdi Polo) :o Will this cause any issues?? Or do I need to start faffing on draining some??

Cheers

When you overfill the expansion tank all you are doing is taking away the area needed for when the coolant gets hot and expands, the excess coolant will now be pushed out of the overflow pipe.

Keep an eye on it but it should drop after a few warm up cycles.

Take the cap off and simply squeeze one of the coolant pipes. Enough should pour out. Or if you have a turkey baster suck the coolant out.

I'd take it out, you could use a clean dry cloth and dip it in to the coolant tank (when cold) which will soak up the coolant then just take out and check the level and repeat untill correct cold level.

it shouldnt really make any difference,

However you need to find the cause of the coolant loss, the system is sealed and any loss usually means a leak in the system.

Hi I have overfilled my coolant by approx and inch on an Octavia. Would this cause the fan to keep kicking in and raisng the idling speed of the engine.

Cheers
