Replacing coolant temp sender - easy?

Featured Replies

It looks it from the info I've been reviewing, but I've found nothing on how to replace the sender. Just "replace sender G62".... I'm assuming there is no need to do any draining down. Not clear what tool is needed (if any?) to remove the old sender and stick the new one in.

Oh, this is on pd100 TDI by the way.

my Brother did this on his PD100 Polo a few months back, and from what i remember it was easy, but a bit fiddly, and he dropped something and we had to go buy a new one (sorry, can't remember what he dropped, but it was cheap).

I was busy replacing his brake switch, so i never saw what the temp sender was like to fit, but it was done in 5 mins.

 Job for me tomorrow then. I sure hope I drop nothing, but would be nice to know what's needed.

i'll try to find out and let you know ;)

Cold engine, release pressure (if any) by popping the cap, then screw the cap back on. Pull out the horseshoe shaped clip and pull the sensor out. If the seal didnt come out pop it out. New seal on the sensor and push it in, push the clip back on and top up the coolant.

Thanks. It will be done when it is probably still below freezing tomorrow so should be nil pressure.

It was the Horseshoe clip that my bro dropped!

If you can, leave it for a day when you can buy a new one..... just incase

Just dont be a bumbling idiot and drop it ;)

Nope - But he has met me a couple of times, hence his comment! ;)

Well, even by my often muppetry skills with my car, that was an easy job. Made easier by the fact I had been supplied the sensor with the T piece for the pipework as well - Didn't need that so popped it out and the seal in the old fitting was still real nice, so used that as well. Not tested it yet, but will probably use the white mongrel to go to work in the morning - to check it is working well. That means all the broken sensors are now fixed. :woot:

PS: Lummox - I did drop the clip as well! But it didn't go far and was easily retrieved. Damn cold was making my fingers shake. :o (I had a spare on the new sensor I bought as well so wasn't too worried)

haha warned you!

If you bought a coolant temp sensor and it was a t piece then congratulations you have just fitted a fuel temp sensor in your cooling system..lol. The coolant temp sensor doesnt come in a housing.

Hmm - I feel I have probably have just changed the fuel temp sender when it didn't need doing. Have realised the coolant temp sender is still held back by my supplier. What I changed was right at the front/right of the engine and what I fitted look identical to what I popped out. There was an odd smell which should have alerted me really. Smelled like fuel and was a bit black/gunky....

Going to wait until I actually RECEIVE a coolant temp sender before attempting this....

Yes well done you changed the fuel temp sensor.

The coolant temp sensor is in the cooling system, located to the right hand side of the cylinder head towards the back.

When it didn't need doing - Oh well - I'll put that one down on my timesheet as "practise" PS: Any sarcasm in the above quote? ;) :P

No, no sarcasm just pointing out fact ;)

Yeah! :P Anyway, any chance of a pic of this sender off the back of wiebo's new/old engine, as I initially did look at the back of the engine but didn't see anything similar (probably because I was looking for something similar to a fuel temp sensor. )

Im should be up there tomorrow so i'll grab a piccy.

Oh, no wonder I never saw it if it's tucked way down there.

I sure hope it works in a fairly similar way to the fuel temp sender one as well.

Yes, but you will get a fair ammount of coolant come out.

Shall grab some from the dealers when next on marsh barton then. I imagine once replaced it won't start to dip in the header tank until it's been running for a while

No that will drain out quick.
