Coolant levels

Featured Replies

Hi Chaps,

Just after a bit of advice - I have a 54 plate Skoda Fabia VRS and have always had one or two little issues that the dealership never really sorted out.

- I tend to get quite a bit of mist/condensation on the inside of the car in the mornings

- I always got the coolant light coming on when the car was cold in the morning

However, the coolant light came on as I was on a trip from West Yorks to London on Sunday and unfortunately it wasn't due to a cold engine and my car is now leaking coolant. At this time the heaters stopped blowing out warm air and blew out purely cold air. The temperature though remained at 90. Once the car had cooled back at home I had to fill it with about 1.5 litres of water to top it up (would water only cause any issues as a 1 off?) Yesterday lunch (1pm) I topped the car up with water and the coolant level remained at the same level even after I had made my journey home at about 7pm which appeared to be great news - There were no signs of leakage on the pipes although there appeared to be something that resembled coolant residue beneath and slightly in front of the radiator.

This morning as I left for work the coolant level had dropped by 2-3 inches below what it was the previous night and there was water underneath the car close to where the radiator was...

My little quandry is that I need to travel 350 miles to Scotland this afternoon and am worried about any potential impact it could have and breaking down on the Highland A roads in Scotland would be a nightmare... By the symptoms I've described has anyone had any experiences that could help me decide whether to delay my trip or whether it will be fine as long as I'm armed to the teeth with bottles of water? :P

I've also tried to play safe and have the car booked in this afternoon with a mechanic to get it looked at but there's always that little nagging doubt at the back of my mind that worries that he might miss something and I'll end up stranded in the middle of no where with nothing but -10 temperatures to keep me company

Cheers for any forthcoming replies :)

:)

The condensation inside the car sounds like the dreaded leaking doors or the drain channels under the bonnet are blocked with crap,

As for the coolant light this sounds like a dodgy coolant sensor and can be changed cheap enough pleanty of posts about this just search and you'll find lot's :)

You have a coolant leak.

Go nowhere until it's fixed.
