Insurance Time again / Excess Survey

Featured Replies

It's that time of the year again - 2 weeks and my insurance is due for renewal.

Just got my renewal quote in from MMA via Swinton - gone up, won't pay that price, need to call them etc.

Anyway - couple of questions/surveys for all you out there.

Here is me and my car:

Car - Octavia vRS TFSI December 2006 - Factory standard with exception of MFD3 installed.

Me - 33, Full Driving license for approx. 15 years and also have 15 years NCB.

No motoring convictions ever - never had a point on my license.

Car kept on private drive in low risk postcode (PE16)

Looking For - Fully Comp, Protected No Claims, Legal, Guaranteed Hire Car, £150 - £200 Voluntary Excess, No Breakdown (still covered by Skoda Assist for a year).

Of the few online quotes I've got so far I'm seeing prices around the £475 mark - does this seem about right for me and my current insurance status?

Onto excesses - what do you guys have as your insurance excess?

As far as I can tell the majority of policies seem to indicate a compulsary excess of around £100 - £150.

However decide on £0 Voluntary and the quotes sky-rocket.

Adding a voluntary of around £200 - £250 makes for a much more reasonable quote, however that suddenly makes the excess £350 - £400.

What kind of total excess are you lot happy to accept?

Just out of interest really.

Gone for nil (which means about £150) (again with MMA ,via HSBC).Bit older than you -got same requirements as you ,lowish postcode ,with 1.4tdi and 04 plate-roundabout £200.(Max NCB + clean licence )

Mind you this year renawal was more than a confused .com reply -(first time in about 5 years they'd tried this )- saved quote and asked them to honour it -they did .

Worth while IMHO trying a look at confused to see what various companies will quote .

I would reccomend you get an online quote from Privilege or Esure as these companies are great for people with a high amount of no claims bonus.

Also make sure you get protected no claims with your new policy.

My voluntary excess is £300

Hope this helps.

I was most unimpressed with "gocompare.com" as a price site and thought maybe they would all be like that :)

Just been to confused.com

I've now got a quote saved:

Fully Comp, Free Courtesy Car, Maximum no claims bonus for life, legal protection

£150 total excess for accidental damage & Fire/Theft, £60 total excess for windscreen

£413.13 from More Than

I shall phone Swinton tomorrow (they broker for my MMA insurance) and give them all of the details as above.

If they can get MMA to match like for like then fine - if not I think I'll give these guys a go.

I like to think that I am a good driver, and wont crash and it be my fault (Have not had a fault claim in 20+ years of driving). As a result I run my insurance with the Maximum voluntary excess, £350. The reduction in premium for this is quiet dramatic, and saved me a packet.
