My 1st crash - Need help

Featured Replies

After slipping on some ice yesterday down a country lane and hitting a grass bank at only 20mph I'm going to need a few things. Firstly I need a vRS front bumper hopefully in silver so I don't have to paint it. I will also need a passenger fog light and its plastic surround.

Does anyone have any idea on prices for this? This is all I know I need so far as I'm getting a mate of mine to check over the suspension and other things. How much would I be looking at if I went to a dealer for this? Just for parts and not for fitting as my mate can do that for me. The car still drives well apart from the tracking being slightly out (and I mean slightly).

I'm absolutely gutted and do feel quite stupid with myself even though there was nothing I could have done and I wasn't driving fast or dangerolusly. I've been on the road for nearly 3 years now and done over 40k since I've passed and this is the 1st thing that's happened to me like this. I've never even been pulled by the police. I just feel so stupid.

Thanks in advance

Martyn

Yes, its easy to be wise afterwards, getting your first "fright" in the winter can be an eye opener, most people experienced or not manage to stay lucky, sadly you didn't! We're all human after all in there lies the problem, don't be too harsh with yourself.

I remember a few years ago when heavy snowing meant I took the "safe" route (I thought) through the middle of town - bad move, gritters had not been activated in time so town with its cobbles and hills and traffic lights was hellish. On that occasion, I managed to stay lucky so did others round about me - the "professional" winter driver would have avoided trouble by staying in bed for a few more hours - or phoning in sick!

Some you can't win despite what the "experts" say!

At least you were doing a low speed, and with some luck you can fix her up without too much money being burnt. Grip on icey roads is xtremely low, and most tyres are shocking at sub-zero temperatures.

In Germany, winter tyres are mandatory now, if you have an accident during the period where you are meant to have them fitted you can be in serious **** with regards insurance ;)

Could have been worse, the last time i was involved in loosing grip on black ice i ended up with the car being wrote off.

make sure he gives it a good check over mate! when i hit a high kerb i thought it was just the bumper that was damaged and fog ligh but turned out where the wheel hit, it cracked the wishbone and also the radiator mount was push over a bit too!

Don't worry he will. I trust him more with my cars than the stealers any day. To be honest he's a one off. He may take longer to do a job but you can guarantee that it will be 100% spot on plus he has all the proper tools and gear it's now just a case of finding the parts I need.

Does anyone know of any prices for what I will need and more importantly part numbers for the fog light, the plastic surround and the colour coded bit? I shall be talking with my mate tonight about the car, maybe he knows of places I can get the parts easily.

I have a source where you can get a new foglight and the 2 parts of the surround at a good price (circa £50 for the whole lot from memory) - The bumper you might have to find one on the 2nd hand market and get it resprayed (guess at £100 to buy, and £100 to spray (plus spraying of the 2 foglight surround parts)

I may come back to you about the light and 2 parts of the surround. But what is the worst case scenario in terms of cost. Say if I had to go to the stealers for the 2 surround parts, the light and bumper and one surround part sprayed by them. How much would I be looking at?

It'd probably be best to just give your local stealers a call and ask for a quote just for the parts. If you're anything like me waiting until then will be hell though ;)

Been driving for just over 2 years now and had a few near misses... luckily no accidents yet thank god. I know i'd be so gutted as I worry over everything

hope it doesn't cost you too much mate

Yeah I am a real worrier I always have been. To be honest I'm more embarrassed I've crashed than anything even though there was nothing I could have really done. The cost doesn't bother me too much although it will probably put a large dent in my student loan money it's mainly the hassle of it all.

I went down a little country road earlier today... it was still covered in snow and the bad conditions had churned up the road into pot hole city. some guy had managed to slip off in his seat leon and park the front end against a tree with half the car down a bank. He was there with 3-4 guys trying to figure out how the hell to get it out.

Can happen to anyone in those conditions so don't feel embarrased. I had a 4 wheel skid on the same road myself at about 5 mph but luckily i went straight

Don't sweat crashing, Fabias aren't the best in ice/snow. And for the first time in years, we've got loads of ice.

You could try steel rims and winter tyres if you regularly use little lanes around the Gower.

PS: I used to live in Broadacre, Killay. :) Got to watch Dunvant in the 1st Div. :)

To give an idea about the foglight and parts, I got the foglights complete and the two parts of the surround for £100 ish. The foglight surround parts are the cheapest parts, and the foglights themselves are the £££ bits. PM me if you want that contact. ;)

Sorry to hear about your mishap, glad you're ok though

I know how it feels, I went nearly a year without even a parking scrape, but then I had a mishap of my own in quite a big way...at least it wasn't my car though ;) It's a horrible feeling isn't it, having no control whatsoever when things go bad. Glad yours was a lowish-speed accident.

Good luck, I hope you get everything sorted without too much fuss and expense. The fabia is a pretty sturdy little beast :D

Cheers,

Andrew

So if anyone knows of a vRS front bumper preferably in silver let me know. I realise they are like hens teeth to get hold of let alone in silver as most accidents are front impacts.

Thanks to everyone

Right an update.

I had my mate have a good look at my car and has found the following:

The alloy is buckled so I'll need a new one.

I need a NSF track control rod.

A NSF track rod end and a gaitor kit for a clip he needs but you can't buy the clip on it's own.

NSF bumper clips and the fog with the surrounding trim pieces.

I also had a good look under the car with him and apart from a few bits of grass caught in the undertray it's pretty good under there. He was surprised at how tough it all was as no bolts have moved and everything is where it's supposed to be. He also checked the bushes which are all perfect.

I asked about a new bumper and he said it is a lot of hassle to get a bumper, paint it and fit it. He thinks my current bumper should be OK as there's just a few parts where its been scraped back to the plastic.

He's going to give me the number of a contracted firm who Audi use (who he works for) who come in and fix paint work and apparently are very good at what they do. He told me about a red RS4 which came in and one of the boys there damaged the rear bumper. They came out, corrected the problem and the customer was none the wiser. He couldn't even work out where on the bumper the work had been carried out so they are worth a go.

Sorry to hear about the crash bud, at least you're ok.

Any pics of the front damage?
