Brakes - ABS empties the servo?

Featured Replies

Coming home today, braked and the abs kicked in. Wasn't braking that hard so took foot off and applied again, pedal was firmer but less braking. Released and applied again pedal very firm and even less braking. Probably did all this quite rapidly but was rather surprised by the lack of brakes. I'm guessing the servo vacuum was depleated. This normal when ABS kicks in?

Never seen this in mine, and I can hardly imagine this is normal.

Happened once with my friend's Fiat Panda 4x4 1.2i (60hp).

He was driving down on a hill, hundred of meters, on first gear and low revs.

After loosing the brakes hi switched off the engine, and then started it again.

No problems after that.

Must consider both the terrain and the small engine size .

Having thought of it, had to do an emergency stop once from something like 120 kmh to stand still. When I came close to a halt I noticed the engine was in the 4k rpm range, though I had pressed the clutch in at about 1500-2000rpm.

Foot off the brake, engine returned to idle.

i find that happens though i always thought it was my foot mashing the throttle as it went diving for the brake pedal

I'm sure it wasn't, as prior to moving the foot off the brake pedal I checked for the same. I guess it's just the EPC throttling up the engine to produce enough power for the servos.

Sounds like one for the garage (needs heated mirrors fixing anyway). I tried it again last night on an empty road and was able to replicate it. Under normal circumstances its not really an issue, stamp on the brakes ABS kicks in and the car stops fine. But given the odd things my brakes seem to do (pedal travel/feel changes) it's probably worth looking in to.

Split vacuum pipe, or possible the pipe has an obstruction of some kind would be my guess. The brake system should not do this and each application of the pedal should have consistant results regardless of if the ABS was used or not.

Fitz323 - That sounds like mine. I was still moving when I had my issue but otherwise its just like it.

I've not spoken to the garage yet as I've been monitoring the other issue with my brakes which seems to of started to cure itself. (variable pedal feel/distance to push pedal to engage brakes, I suspect sticking rear pads/caliper). Will report that the garage says re ABS once I've got it in to them.
