Just become an Observer with the IAM

Featured Replies

After passing my test last August I decided that I wanted to go back & train to be an Observer with the IAM. Well on Thursday night I passed the exams & I will get my first associate in the next couple of weeks.

Congratulations

Well done, i was told when i passed mine i should consider this as my test was great and the commentry i gave was the best he had seen (heard even) in a long time, telling me if i could get new members to give commentrys like i did would be great as many observers dont spend much time on this these days as its not an essential requirement on IAM test (but stops examiner asking silly questions lol).

If i had the time and didnt work the shift pattern i do these days then i would, so well done mate and look forward to many satisfying phone calls from people thanking you for preparing them for the test!!!

I'm one too and our 2009 courses are full so we're now booking for January 2010 !

I'm not sure how full we are but I know a lot of first responders are coming through at the min so were very busy. Does mean I get plenty of practice though.

Well done :)

did this way back and then hated it... when you sit next to an "older" man who thinks you are old enought to be his son, he wont take much notice of the observations made....

I hope your experience is better than mine.

observation skills were the main IAM trait when I did mine, and its proven invaluable. I take it for granted now as its habit, along with some bad habits no doubt, but its kept me safe for many a year since, where others pile into incidents they just did'nt see happening ahead.

good luck observing, hope they take the inputs on board.

Excellent stuff, well done!

Thanks for all the comments. I'm looking forward to starting with this, bit nervous as I've now got to teach what I do when driving.

However I'm quite good a teaching people so shouldn't be to bad once I get into it.

Yup :( I give it a year before the associates irritate you to the point of giving up!!

Congratulations though :) It's difficult being examined the second time around.

it as a process was very good. I am glad I did it, and it has continued to serve me well.... I dont drive to it in classic roadcraft style now I'm sure, but the observational and reading of the road has been superb.

My wife has picked up aspects off my driving over the years, and on several occasions commented on how things are avoided and predicted, just because they have been seen way in advance.

Good luck with your observing.. without some helpers like you, the good work wont spread.

hope you enjoy it
