BMW 535d

I know, another Germanic C*ck car thread from me, but have you seen how cheap these are just now? Between £15 to £20K for a reasonable to good £50K car

This is a bit more realistic than an M3 CSL, I could seriously see one of these parked on the road outside my humble abode. Twin turbo, 280BHP, 0-60 in 6 seconds and approx 30 MPG. & More torques than a Ferrari 360!

A dark M sport would suit me down to the ground I reckon.

I'd rather have the dosh in my pocket still. My 2 pence worth

I really really want to have a play in one of these, see if I can fall in love with diesel again...

30mpg though? I'm getting 28mpg average out of my 328 at around 230bhp and abused regularly... I know the 5 series is a newer car (about 10 years newer ) but surely its capable of more than that??

30 MPG takes into account the knob behind the controls.

Clarkson could only manage 12 MPG in one of these:

A lovely car, very well balanced and a stonking engine too. Had the pleasure of watching someone putting an unmarked police one (on loan for evaluation :D ) round a handling course at Bruntingthorpe and the last lap was mostly sideways

Not quite as drive focussed as an M3, but a lot more understated :D

Chris

I drove one last year and it's such a lovely engine and a cracking chassis.

Prices of them have tumbled but I still wouldn't rush out to buy one just yet unless you plan to keep it for quite a number of years as buyers of these vehicles are scarce.

The big question is, could you deal with being branded such a massive c**k? :P They are nice, but i would never live it down if i had one.

I'd have a 335d M-Sport Touring instead. Do you actually need something the size of a 5?

No I don't really, but I just like the presence of the 5. The latest 3 is so boring to look at it makes me want to fall asleep. It only looks good in coupe form IMHO. I'll have a look at the touring as I haven't really seen one close up.

Know exactly where you're coming from - the current 3 saloon looks awful IMO, even in M-Sport trim. I'd look at the Coupe too, but I've always been a fan of the lines on a Touring, plus there's a bit more room.

Steve

I'd love a facelift touring 335i/335d. They just look "right" imho.

I like the facelift saloon too, 10x better than the pre-facelift which just looked dull.

I spotted this on pistonheads at the weekend, and would have bought it by now if it wasn't for job security issues.

MPG wouldn't be too far of my octy, i believe.

How much does the 328 weigh Tom?

Steve

1395kg according to Parkers. I certainly notice the difference in performance when I have passengers etc.

Bit too 'gangsta' for my liking, but keenly priced

Well there's the MPG similarity explained then :)

535d weight? 1735 kg

Urban Fuel: 31.4 mpg

Extra Urban: 52.3 mpg

Combined: 42.2 mpg

650 mile tank range and 178g/Km, putting it in Band E. So think most would do better than Mr Pitt's estimated figure :D

I'd expect high 30s in mixed running.

It's ok it's not an Audi ;)

Seriously nice car and that engine really shifts for such a big car.

I'm more tempted by a 335d, but I won't be changing cars until either the economy has bottomed out, or the world is broken.

5 a bit of a barge in my opinion but 335d must be a stormer! :D

I've been a-looking round at the 335d m sport touring, which then led me on to look at the 335i M Sport Touring:D I actually like them rather a lot! A lot more practicality, and a lot less c*ckticality of the Coupe. Would be lovely with a de-badge and a remap!

Evo mag have a 335i MST on long term test so been reading their niggles and faults with it. Other reviews mostly give it 5 out of 5, and claim it's like an (non V8) M3 touring.

The petrol 335 MST is seriously like rocking horse poo just now. I can't find a reasonably priced one anyway, even on BMW approved used.

Which makes me want one even more!

I understand the diesels are prone to more problems like blown turbo's, and also the 330i is 272bhp(i think) not a lot less power than the 335i (50bhp?), but certainly simpler (also not as tuneable, but 272 would see me happy:D)

With the 335i, Evo had a turbo replaced due to seal issues on the 1st one they ran on a long-term test. So with either the 330d or 330i, there could be an argument that there's less to go wrong.

And talking of petrols, and the coupe this time - I thought this took quite a lot to beat as a 2nd hand buy

Oh and the _35d is auto only as well, which is another reason that I'd go for a manual 330d MST instead.

If I had the spare pennies, of course!

:eek::eek: Is that a misprint? Now that's value for money in my book.

That's what I thought. 40k premium motor that's dropped more than 50% in under 2yrs. Suppose that's par for the course now! Big engined will put people off, but relatively speaking pretty economical.

There's another similar car on PH at the moment as well, with less mileage! Preferred that colour and spec though. Just pop 335i in the search under E90s, and filter for less than 20k.

I think I'd be happy with the 330i... I think :rubchin:

That 335i looks spot on though, right up my street that!!

Its a shame the tourings are so rare, but they all seem nicely specced! There was a red m-sport 335i touring on Autotrader for ages under £20k...

Did the 335i MST come out in '06, or was it '07?

I'm just thinking that a lot will be on 3 year lease, so there should be a few more used cars trickling through this year or next year. I'll start saving me pennies I think. (until summat else catches my eye)
