Clutch release bearing questions

Featured Replies

Hey there folks... my clutch has been making a funny rattly sort of noise for some tme now that dissapears when the clutch is depressed.

A friend of mine diagnosed it as the clutch release bearing.

Now... can this be replaced on its own or am I just as well getting the whole clutch kit and getting that fitted while they've got the thing apart?

The clutch isn't too bad and was replaced I think about 25k ago by the previous owner but seems more worn than that tbh so would probably be nice to have a new clutch in there.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Phil

If its going to be changed its best getting it all done whilst the cars in bits.

I agree, it is pretty pointless to just change the bearing. The cost is the labour just to get into the clutch, so when they are there you may as well get the friction plate changed too.

I'd change the lot but it could also be an issue with the first motion shaft bearings in the gearbox.

Maybe when it was changed before they just changed the friction material and cover plate. I think it's usual practice to change the lot including the release bearing.

Is that something thats likely to occur?

Would there be any other signs of this maybe when the car is moving etc?

Will see if i can dig the receipt out with the info on and if the bearing wasn't changed then its probably likely to be that.

Thanks

I would check that there is enough oil in the gearbox before dismantling the car. If the level is low, top it up and see if the noise dissapears. Could save you some time and money.

Good plan.

What grade oil do I need as my owners manual is tucked away at the moment.

Thanks

I did not open another thread cause there is a lot on this topic so I`ll just fit this in, I got a question I`v repalced my the clutch release bearing on my favorit for an aftermarket one,It looked different... before I refit the gearbox I pulled and pushed the fork lever and notice the bearing was jamming in the shaf and could not pull the lever back,I figured all it need was some copper grease, and it did do the job of around a week, then it jammed today whilst I was going home and ended up switching the engine off to put it in second for the trip back.

Phil: It's definitely not worth all the effort of taking everything apart and not changing the friction and pressure plate, for the sake of £40 it's really not worth it!

The input shaft can get noisy (the front bearing on it is only small, and can suffer from lack of lubrication), you'll tend to hear that as more of a whirring sound when the car is in neutral, engine running, clutch pedal up....

WM: I've had a couple of dodgy clutch release bearings that have been problematic at the extremes of motion when the gearbox isn't on the car (i.e. the lever moves further than it would when there's a clutch there), but never once in place. I think anything like that that -needs- lubrication to make it function will not last for long as in that application the lubrication will soon get moved out the way.... bummer.

Thats a very good observation,I recon If I replace the pressure plate the bearing will go back where its supposed to.

Thanks for your input.
