Coolant temperature sensor.

Featured Replies

Mine's been on it's way out for a while, and now it looks like it finally given up.

Anyway my question is, where abouts will I find it (read in another thread that it's near the exhaust manifold), and is it an easy enough job to carry out, can you do it from above, or will I need to raise the car?

Thanks.

I'm going to do mine sometime this week, I've been assured it's an easy job, just pull a clip out and replace, take the engine cover off and the insulation under it and I think it should show itself, they're somewhere in the £20 bracket iirc.

Is your EML on and off and the car still running sweet?

I do have an EML on, but I don't think that it is associated with the coolant sensor as that has been on the blink for a couple of months now, the EML on came on yesterday - and wow did it come on! Loads of smoke from the exhaust, loss of power - but i;m hoping it's linked to the EGR valve which I am going to replace tomorrow. I think I may as well do the sensor at the same time.

Speaking of removing the engine cover - I removed mine about 12 months ago due to the amount of rattling it did. This was due to the 3 bush type thingies which it sits oon having perished - anybody know where I might get some new ones of these from?

Gonna get the sensor from GSF tomorrow, i'll post in here what the cost is.

Yep, that sounds about right, VAG haven't discovered robust rubber yet.

Have they Gizmo?

Hi Chaps,

I did this a while ago - details in this thread -

http://briskoda.net/superb/engine-coolant-temperature-sensor/109698/#post1289533

If you need the pictures that have disappeared from the thread I can dig them out for you.

Cheers,

Paul.

Cheers mate - from the post you link to it looks like I will be pushing the envelope of my ability so some pictures would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Images attached. Good luck!

This is how I changed the engine coolant temperature sensor with help from a mate. This job needs a second pair of hands as you can’t reach for the new sensor and the tools you need whilst removing the old sensor. If you choose to do this yourself you do so at your own risk. Make sure the engine is cold!

The old sensor has part #078919501C, whilst the new sensor has part# 059919501A you are also best to get a new o ring and a new clip just in case. If your coolant is on minimum, you might want some more of that too.

1. Remove engine covers

2. Remove under tray - both parts

3. Unclip large hose to allow room to work

4. Remove electrical connector from sensor using flathead screwdriver – best done from underneath

5. Remove sensor retaining clip - best done from underneath

6. Remove old sensor and quickly put your finger in the hole to stop coolant leaking – best done from above

7. Remove the finger bringing with it the old ‘o’ ring quickly place another finger in the hole to prevent further coolant leaking – best done from above

8. Remove finger and quickly place new sensor (fitted with new ‘o’ ring) into place – you will lose a bit more coolant – best done from above

9. Fit the new clip

10. Re fit the wiring to the new sensor

11. Refit large hose, engine covers and under tray – job done

Here is an image of the engine bay from the offside, the sensor is circled in red, and a close up photo of the sensor

Have you got a shot of the old one once it's removed showing the other side of it, i.e the internal side which you can't see right now, thx in advance.

I found the old sensor - here is a photo.

Note that the new sensor has a green plastic cap around it rather than black.

Thanks for the photos. Got my new sensor today (£16.50 + vat from GSF) they call it a green 4 pin, going to do the job tomorrow - honest - it was raining by the time i had time to do it today. Just a bit worried that mine didn't come with any clip!

You should be ok to re-use the existing clip, they are made of very tough plastic.

The clip has part# 032121142

Did you get a new o-ring? I replaced mine just in case.

No. no o ring either. Hopefully it will be ok if I don't dislodge the existing one?

Job done, easier than I thought. I think the fact that the egr was removed made it a little easier, was able to do the job from above. Cheers.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well I went and got one today, took it all to bits and guess what....wrong sensor, I can only say how unhappy the mechanic was as he did it in the rain and in the dark, what should've been an hour job tops turned into a 2 hr nightmare, the sensor was square and had 4 large pins and a blue body, the old one is shaped like a lipstick sitting on a rectangle and has 4 small deep recessed pins, gotta do it all again tomorrow.

Done, GSF guy gave me a new O ring for free and didn't charge extra for the correct sensor, good service imo, have to put the wrong one down to pure human error and accept it happens.

Glad you got it sorted, I was gutted when I heard you had the wrong sensor.

Also good to know it can be done all from above, I had trouble finding the damn thing so ended up removing undertrays.

Does the car run better now?

Cheers,

P.

Can't speak for anybody else, but it didn't make the slightest bit of differenc to how my car runs.

I can't say I've noticed any difference in how it runs, but I'm usure if it's function is just to tell the temp gauge how hot things are or if it send back to the ecu to adjust the fuel ratios as the engine heats up, i.e act like a choke, mine was running ok anyway just had the eml on at times, which when you don't have the seat belt on and are running low on gas becomes like next weeks top twenty hit as you turn on :D
