hello all, and help needed with engine whine

Featured Replies

first of all i would like to say hello to all members. i am new here:thumbup:

now, can someone please help me out, i have a 2003 octavia vrs. I am expeiriencing a loud whine when under full acceleration, it can also be heard alot quieter under de-accelaration. If only half throttled though the noise does not appear. any ideas please???

uh-oh - anybody else thinking "turbo" ... ?

soapywalrus, i was thinking that too, but you can still hear the spool up and im not losing any boost. There is no smoke from my exhaust either.

Turbo comes to mind, perhaps a warped blade? Suggest you get it checked out sharpish.

welcome to briskoda, hope you get your problem solved and keep enjoying your Skoda.

Davy

only thing that stops me thinking turbo is that it's still there on the over-run... Other thoughts are bearings, possibly on gearbox? Is the problem better or worse in certain gears? Either way, get it checked as soon as you can. If left, things like this have a nsaty habit of biting you on the behind!

Good luck with it.

welcome along

thanx alot for your help guys. Just to answer some of your questions, the noise is the same in every gear, i am not driving it since the noise, but will take to garage asap, i was just hoping it could be a pipe or something, so i dont have to pay someone to do an easy job

Welcome from me too. :) I have moved your query into the Octavia 1 forum.

How many miles has it done? Mine used to whine a fair bit in every gear and much more noticable when de-celerating, got the gearbox oil changed and the whine went away. Mine was approx 90k

I'm guessing you are welsh by your username (damn I'm good lol)

Where roughly are you located, I maybe able too help you if your near Cardiff.

lol, good detective work fatty5000, i am actually from cardiff, thanx for the offer but my car has been booked in now to be looked at. where abouts u from???

matt my car has done 71k, that seems to be an interesting 1, did your car not whine at idle???

anyone know that if anything went with the turbo whether it would bring the engine warning light on????

As long as the oil seals are ok, a basic turbocharger is very reliable, as it should be, since it's just 2 sets of turbine blades on a short shaft.

Issues with turbos tend to run more to problems with electronically controlled control valves, and sticky wastegates or VVT mechanisms.

If your car's not emitting blue or white smoke we can eliminate the oil seals. If it is, you need a new or rebuilt turbo.

It's quite possible for the electronic valves on the Octy turbos to go, causing faults which would generate EMS warnings.

I can't remember hearing it on idle, mind you my car doesn't really get much time to idle and it's very noisy too.

ken o neil, thanx 4 the info, very interseting, i have no smoke from the exhaust and no warning light, which does that mean the fault has to b mechanical??

It's strongly indicative that the fault is mechanical, or at least not going to cost for a new turbocharger. Now some more questions:-

1) Is it there with the interior fan running, and clear if you turn the fan off (with Climatronic, press fan speed \/ button until the display turns off?

2) Is it louder if you've got an RH window open and/or you've a wall of some sort fairly close on your right?

3) Do you have any feeling that the car's lost top end power since this started?

lol, good detective work fatty5000, where abouts u from???

You have a PM regarding this :):)

I'm not the greatest tech type by any stretch of the imagination but if you need it scanned for fault codes give me a shout :D

ken o neil, the whine was there with the fans on or off, climate on or off.

it seems a bit loader with the windows down, but still very noticable with the windows shut 2.

i havnt really drove it since the whine but seemed to pull with the turbo kicking in as normal, but it only tried that to see if there was smoke didnt take it up the revs.

fatty500, my car is in the garage at the moment being looked at. thanx for the offer though..:)could it still show fault codes even though my engine warning light hasnt come on?????

If could just be paranoia (best case), or something like you losing the undertray (which will let more turbo whoosh out).
