Vista fails to get IP address on resume

Featured Replies

I'm after a little help here as this has bugged me for a while.

I quite often use a laptop when downstairs. Up until recently I have used a Linksys DSL router on the end of my Virgin Media broadband with no problems. e.g. from sleep or hibernate I get an IP address within seconds.

Linksys by Cisco - WRT54GS Support

Due to a change in circumstances I have moved to BT broadband. With the BT Home Hub 2 whenever I resume from sleep or hibernation I fail to get a network IP address just a local one. To fix this I normally ended up rebooting the laptop (Dell Inspiron 1501).

As I had a linksys router for years I bought an ADSL one. Linksys by Cisco - WAG54GS Support

Plugged it in and set it up. Seemed ok until the resume from sleep problem which was better but not quite fixed even after deleting all other networks.

When I get home later I will try upgrading the firmware I just wondered if anyone else has had similar problems as I fail to see why it only affects my ADSL connections.

This is for wireless connections. Wired works fine.

First question as my house mate had this, are you running SP1?

Try ditching dynamic and switch to fixed IP address, I used to have same problem, and since changing no problem

Radiotwo

Interested as to the solution, I have had this problem with two vista laptops so far, my only solution, similarly to yourself is to switch the wireless card off and back on again. :(

I had this problem also on XP, and with a LinkSys router. This problem did not happen to me on other routers, and the problem occurred whether using wireless, wired, or both.

It seemed to go wrong in particular if a new lease was given out after a power cut (on the router).

Sometimes a 'repair' on the network connection fixed it. Odd :(

Yes SP1.

I had this too as Ian knows and my fix was also to turn off and on again, possibly even restart the PC and it was also with a Linksys. Since upgrading to the Draytek it's been 100 times better but has happened once or twice.

The problem is the router and not the laptop, the home hub in my experience is very poorly implemented. Early ones used easily hacked encryption on the wireless, not sure if later ones are any better. They work fine until something out of the ordinary happens, eg. laptop going to sleep and then they hicup when the device reappears. Check BTs website to see if there is an updated firmware for the home hub as a starting poimt.

I intend to use the Linksys not the Home Hub as I think it is a bit poo anyway.

I will try the Linksys firmware update and see where it goes from there.

Why not just use a static IP as suggested for the PC Ian, it will eliminate the problem and save doing a firmware upgrade .... if it ain't broke, don't fix it :)

Kinda jumping in here - but when I installed the LinkSys at someones house it was to get rid of the need to have a static IP configured. My router at home can do dhcp but reserved by client MAC, which most routers for the consumer market just don't offer as a feature.

As a fail-safe to this, you could set it up for DHCP on the client and set a static IP etc as the alternate setting. Only issue with that is that it will always think it is connected, and if it grabs the static IP it will need a 'repair network connection' to get rid of the static one again.

Disable IPv4 and just use Ipv6 if the router supports it :) You don't need DHCP then for dynamic addressing, that works a treat on Vista.

You could of course go to the greener side of the fence and get an Apple :P :P

Other than that ditch Vista. It's the worst OS since windows ME. Try using windows 7 beta if you really must have the latest OS. Otherwise use XP with SP3 and then install Vista Transformation Pack and you will find you machine will respond like XP but look like Vista.

I used to have alsorts of probs when resuming vista. Sound would go off, Wireless wouldn't work, Graphics Card wasnt recognised etc. In the End i went back to XP and used VTP.

Then i saw the light when my GF got me my MBP. Never again shall i use a windows based PC/laptop

Had a little "remote assistance" which appears to have helped.

Despite having deleted all other wireless networks they still appeared in the Network and Sharing - Customize - Merge or Delete Network Locations.

My guess is the wireless card then tries all listed networks and gets its head stuck up its ar5e.

Tried it this morning and it worked just fine.:o

Sounds nasty

As I said I don't think it will stop it happening but at least you now know how to deal with it.
