Recommend me a good digital camera

Featured Replies

As per the title

I currently have a Sony DSC-T70 however i am not happy with the quality of the pics.

Its an 8.1mp camera however most of my shots seem to come out grainy quite a lot. I've fiddled around with the settings but cant seem to get it any better than what i have now. I reckon its due to the Lens. My last Kodak camera had a Scheinhauzer or something like that lens was only 3.2mp and the pics were amazing in quality compared to this that i have now. the reason i changed was the Kodak was quite bulky and the sony is quite slim.

Im looking at up to £250 as im in the Army and i dont want to be running around overseas with a really expensive camera.

Must take 4gb memory cards SD or Memory Stick Duo

Have good battery life

A decent lens

Good optical zoom (both this and kodak had 3 x optical zoom)

Do all the usual stuff like sepia, Black and white etc.

Not really fussed about Mega Pixels but 5 or above would be better

Ta very much

I was thinking about picking up a nice point and shoot myself. I was looking at one of these.Leica C-Lux 3 Black Compact Camera (18338) - Warehouse Express

A guy I was working with recently had one and I thought it took great pics. I know it's a bit over budget but there is a cheaper one here Leica C-Lux 2 Black Compact Camera (18320) - Warehouse Express

A good site for camera image comparisons Pixel-Peeper -- More than 100,000 full-size sample photos from lenses, SLR cameras and digicams.

I love my old Canon IXUS 700 - Just ordered an IXUS 80 on the merits of the old 700 - and its only £115 from Amazon.

For £250 you could get a D40 and 18 - 55 mm lens, a bit bulkier than a P&S but even at only 6mp will give high quality results. Takes SD cards and should the need arise for better zoom etc , interchangeable lenses.

I bought an Ixus 80 a couple of weeks ago and I'm really pleased with it - it's really easy to use and has a great macro setting too. I used to use an early version of this camera which is why i chose it and I definitely recommend it :)

I also have a D40 - brilliant camera, have had some great results from it (bought the Ixus because it's more portable than an SLR).

They've come down in price since I got mine 2 years ago :(

Another vote vote the Canon Ixus range - mine is a Ixus 50 that I've had a few years but I would definitely buy another from them if this ever gives up.

No bigger than a pack of cigs, and mine has travelled to quite a few countries with me now with no problems.

I'd recommend the Panasonic FZ28.

Huge optical zoom, quality lens, image stabilizer, plenty of controls if you want to use them, 10 megapixels.

18x optical zoom, which can go up to 32x if you drop the megapixels down.

No need to move to an SLR unless you are after professional quality pctures, but then the lenses would cost a small fortune to get the same focal length.

I'd go with a Panasonic Lumix TZ-5 myself. Solid, compact and great optical zoom range, plus wide angle. I got SWMBO the TZ-3 and it's superb

If you are set on a P&S then the new Ricoh R10 with 10mp and a 7 X optical zoom gets pretty good reports and its well under £200.

My mum has that camera and swears by it. It just seems a bit bulky compared to the Sony. But its probably no bulkier than my old Kodak so thats defo a possibilty.

Carl:thumbup:

Panasonic - you know it makes sense

Oh, hang on - you went Macintosh didn't you :P

FZ28 if you want 18x zoom

TZs if you want compact - Panasonic have now uprated / superceded TZs with 12x zoom ZS range.

Another vote for the Panasonic. I had the earlier version FZ18 when it came out, it's been ideal for all situations.

FZ28 is to bulky im afraid. I need a compact one due to the job :o)

Anothe vote for an entry level DSLR, the D40 is an exellent intro into semi-professional photography and it's very easy to use and it makes photography more fun and makes you look at things a different way when you have full control or you can just leave it in full auto and just snap away. The standard lens is fine for the majority of the time but you might find after a while wanting a longer or better quality lens which you can buy without changing to camera, at least to a certain extent anyway.

Have a look at the fujifilm range. I have a S8000 which has a 18x optical zoom and I am very pleased with it.

Think this model has now been replaced with the s8100

FinePix S8000fd Digital Camera from Fujifilm UK

My camera is a Casio EX-S880. Very nice camera. It is thin and fits in your pocket as well as being easy to use.

This camera, which cost me £130 new, has an added advantage in that it has a bank of 38 settings which adjust image settings according to what you select. It includes the capability to take photos at night - Plac Solny: at night :: CIMG1761.JPG :: Fotopic.Net - and is highly capable of doing good quality YouTube clips.

I got mine via Jessops but I think they have moved on to other Casios. However, Casio's online shop were advertising them until quyite recently but if you decide to get one then eBay (or something similar) might be your best bet.

Mine has never given me problems. All in all, 10/10.

Glad to hear you've decided to join the happy band of FZ28 owners - I don't think you'll regret it.

:)Good choice, sure you'll be pleased with it.

If Mater is still in the market, you can view sample shots on here

by simply choosing camera type in the boxes, it then searches out

photos on the net, helped me choose the FZ28:)

Another vote for Panasonic, I have the DMC-LX2 which has the Leica lens, which is virtually the same as the Leica C LUX 3 version, but at a much lower price, and cannot fault it.
