Traction Control Warning

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

On the way to work this morn I hit a pot hole and busted a Tyre agggg!! Well anyways had to replace a tyre but ever since the Traction control light intermitanly flashes sometimes for up to 1 min cutting back my power.

Does any one know what this indicates seems worse when climbing slops in the road???

Is it possible that I damaged somthing when hitting the pot hole??

Any info on this greatly welcomed

Many Thanks Veedubdan

I "think" you may have damaged the wheelspin sensor, I'm not 100% sure that the correct term for it but thats what it does, as in sense sensing slip which in turn cuts power too the wheel.

So your car now thinks its spinning when it isn't hence problems your having.

It's the ABS sensor probably, and yes, it is also used to detect wheelspin.

How different are your left and right tyre? is the older tyre on the same "axle" well worn?

Back on the bimmer forums they used to have fun with traction control having a fit with odd size tyres on an axle...

If the sensor's faulty it'll be showing a code :)

Thats the one, I couldn't remember what it's correct name was :o

:iagree:

If you're lucky the connector has become loose in the sensor. Otherwise. a sensor is easy to replace.

It would be worth getting the car scanned to confirm this.

Could be ABS sensor or its connector, distorted wheel from the impact, or tyre of different diameter (new vs worn out thread on the axle).

I once bounced off a high kerb at speed in the Octavia, bending steel wheel rim all the way outwards at this point. Amazingly, the tyre survived at full pressure (must have been a good glue) and I was able to limp home. But I had a "disco" traction control light all the way whenever the speed went above 30mph.

I'm thinking "damaged wheel sensor" too, and wondering why it's not throwing a ABS fault light.

The sensors go to the ABS ECM and it is pretty dumb when it comes to intermittant faults. It is quite happy with an imaginary 100 yard skid every couple of minutes even when your not braking:(

Actually, for the OP, do you ever get a vibration through the brake pedal, when you don't expect it, since this bump? If you do, I think that would pretty much confirm the damaged wheel sensor.

Cheers for the reply people. Alot of useful info.

Had the car put on Vag computer today but shows no faults at all. My mechanic thinks difference in tyre treads may cause the traction control to over compensate thus flashing the light. So I changed the other tyre today still same fault but computer shows nothing???

A friend of mine sugested possible damage to front suspension (Shock) may cause the traction control to cut in as it would make that wheel lighter. Any one agree??

If so how do I know by looking at the shocks if they are done in??

many Thanks again

Hi, If the impact was on the front you've probably damaged the steering angle sensor. If you plug vas5052 or vagcom in, the fault will probably read ' G85 steering angle sensor, implausable signal'

G85 is the slip ring unit mounted behind the steering wheel and airbag.
