Help Tailgate won't open

Featured Replies

This just happened yesterday. The remote central locking will not open the tailgate. Opens all the doors ok. My guess is the solenoid/motor is either jammed or seized. This is frustrating as I also can't use the key. The only way in is to pull down rear seats and crawl in to release the orange lever to get someone to pull the boot up. I took the plastic cover off the tailgate and checked all wires are fitted ok. I released the arm to the key lock thinking the solenoid was stopping the key lock turning, but it still did not turn, so thinking this is siezed now also....

Any ideas....

I Had the same thing happen on my MK1 but i took the solenoid off yesterday which was also stopping me turning the key. However I happened to drop it. But for some reason decided to try it again after that and it worked. Fingers crossed it will stay working, but if not I think they can be brought fairly cheaply.

Hope you have some luck, not much fun trying to reach the orange release inside.

Yep tell me about it. I thought that by removing the rod from the solenoid to the key lock mechanism, it would allow the key to turn, but nope. I can only asume the key lock is seized from lack of use as it seems daft not to turn on its own. Thanks

ah yeah your lock does not sound healthy. When i removed my solinoid I was able to opperate the lock itself.

Not sure if its a silly idea but WD40?

Folks managed to fix this today.

With help from this thread and a WD40 can I exercised the key lock then stripped apart the motor solenoid and re greased, all is now well.

Apologies for bumping a two-month-old thread, but I've just dismantled, lubricated and reassembled the jammed tailgate lock on the Memsahib's MY04 Octy TDI hatch - and it all works now! Saved a trip to the dealer, anyway, and if the fix doesn't last I now know what the replacement (VW) gizmo looks like.

Thanks to previous posters!

A soleniod is basically a motor (looks like a scalectrics one) that sits in a housing with a few cogs that sits on a shaft in that housing that triggers movement of the tailgate rods from either the key or remote being used.

Here is a pic of it.

It sounds like the same issue i had in that the solenoid appears to have seized. I doubt you are getting full movement in the rods, probably just the rod that the handle is linked to. Here is a pic explained. It was not too difficult to fix

Yep..

I found both of my locks would not turn. With some applications of plus-gas, they both eventually started working. I would suggest it was worth exercising both locks on a regular basis....
