Someone totalled my Scout, GAP insurance??

Featured Replies

a clear indicator that most people (particularly those in stupid Chelsea Tractors) don't adapt their driving or sense of risk aversion to the conditions, and just presume that the car will do it for them. It's the curse of electronics and "safer" cars.

I think all 4x4s should have a huge sticker on the windscreen when they are delivered... THIS CAR IS CLEVERER THAN YOU. BUT THE CO-EFFICIENT OF FRICTION BETWEEN RUBBER AND ICE IS STILL ZERO!!

I agree, the guy would have struggled to have stopped in the dry never mind an inch of snow between the tarmac and his rubber! Idiot! And we're the innocents in all this but who's car drove away without a scratch?His.....at least he has admitted full responsibility for the whole thing, his insurance company called me today.

Dan

yeah, but it isn't.

Please see attached pics.

The guy at the accident repairers said:

"I think it's going to be a gonner, it's got both doors wrecked, both pillars, the sills and suspension"

But it's not his decision.....

He has taken pics and sent to my insurer who's engineers will check them......your thoughts?

Bear in mind that also the windscreen is gone and both airbags are out.

I don't want it back if I'm honest.

Thanks,

Dan

Hopefully your insurance will do new for old in the event of total loss within the first 12 months.

That's a gonner.

If you've lost 2 doors, an A pillar and the B pillar, the sill, bumper, bonnet, airbags (2 or do you have side bags that went off too),

You also need a new wishbonne, that one has been clean broken, and I can't see the driveshaft so that's probably gone too. If it's broken then trying to drive could have had it flailing around.

If your insurance co give you new for new you're ok and if they dojn't then the GAP will cover it.

Best of luck and hope you've not got any injuries from it.

Cheers guys.

The passenger and driver airbag went off, no pillar ones (if they even exist in my car).

Fingers crossed it is deemed as a write off and I can replace it with a non-crashed vehicle!

Dan

With what we see in the pictures, and probably the snow hiding loads more damage, and the bags&co, I'd say the car is a goner.

:iagree:

It's the damage you can't see to the structural pieces of the front end, engine bay, mounts etc etc.

Good luck with the settlement.

Hopefully your insurance will do new for old in the event of total loss within the first 12 months.

Been reading through this thread from the top and this was my thought; what does your main insurance policy cover you for? Mine covers for replacement new car if less than one year old, some companies e.g. SAGA, will do this for a car up to two years old.

If this is the case you do not need GAP insurance.

PS> sorry to hear your sad tale; glad that you and family are OK.

Well guys, had confirmation today it is a write-off as it apparently needs a new bodyshell....never mind!

My insurance covers me for market value I believe and the GAP will make it up to Feb 2007 invoice value.

Cheers all for your help. Now to look for cars!

Dan

Mine covered the first year full replacement. The gap policy from the lease firm covers any shortfall

My insurance also guarentees a suitable/equivilant size & closest spec match loan car in the event of a claim as part of the business class 1 cover we have for SWMBO to go to clients offices when her employer pimps her services out. Unlimted time for non fault, max 6 weeks for fault claims. Beats a corsa or Matiz.

At a guess it'd be a reasonable spec vectra/mondeo they'd hire in.

We got a 2008 Land Rover Discovery 3 as a courtesy car (it's huge and thirsty).....the GAP cover ensures I get what I paid for the car a year ago.

Cheers,

Dan

Sorry to hear about the collision, but glad you got the resolution you wanted and that everyone was OK. So - another Scout then? It did look nice in the snowy pictures (for the side that wasn't damaged! :))

It's either gonna be another Scout or a 2005/2006 normal Octy Mk2 4x4 for approx £8500 and keep the rest of the cash......

What are the main differences between the Scout and the Octy 4x4?

All I can tell are:

Big plastic bumpers on Scout

Auto lights on Scout

Cruise control standard on Scout

17" alloys on Scout

Rear parking sensors standard on Scout

Same engine and 4x4 on both, how about ride height?

Anything else?

As far as I was concerned, the Scout was just a specced up 4x4 with big bumpers :)

Steve

And an extra 17mm on the ride height. Also AFAIR there is more under body protection.

Guys,

I signed for a used black 2006 Octavia 4x4 TDI today. we are 2nd owners, previously owned by Bank of Scotland. Covered 28,000 business miles, dual zone air con, in dash 6 CD changer great condition and FSH......£8,500 with new MOT and Tax and Service from a local garage.....it seemed like fate when it appeared on Autotrader as I was looking for the very car! My wife works about 500 metres away from the garage.

Good deal you reckon? I now want the Scout alloys for it as it only has piddly 15's! Tempted to ask the accident repairers if they'll let me swap ;)

Wondering if I can retrofit cruise control and rear parking sensors now......

Cheers,

Dan

Glad you got something sorted - sounds nice

Yes, I can imagine you wanting to change the wheels - the std 4x4 ones look awful IMO and that's one of the best changes on the Scout, those alloys.

Steve

cruise shouldn't be too much hassle for a pro but the sensors might not be so easy.

  • Author

Pic. Don't worry about the wiper position, I know all about it.

So, could I do cruise control easily?

Actually, I reckon you could fit parking sensor easier. It's just that you're not going to have the OEM ones. Useless to retrofit OEM as you're not going to get the image on the Stream I've been told, so just get a decent brand ones and have them painted to match the body color.
