OK i know which one i would go for, but SHMBO thinks i am trying to railroad her into my choice,

they all do (roughly) the same MPG, cost around the same to buy and will be on either an 03 or 04, specs are pretty similar e.g.:

A/C, alloys, electric windows/mirrors, CD player, colour coded bumpers, air bags, remote central locking, traction control, FSH

Except the differences i have noted below.

So the choices are:

VW Polo 1.9 Sport TDi 100hp

Insurance group 6, £120 tax (£110 next year)

no traction control, manual rear windows, cloth sports seats, leather steering wheel.

VW Golf 1.9 TDi Either a S, Match or SE, all 100hp

I.G 8, £120 tax, (£125 next year)

no adjustable lumbar support, electric sunroof or A/C,

VW Golf 1.9 TDi GT 130hp

I.G.13, £125 tax (stays the same next year)

6 speed box, A/C & electric sunroof, no adjustable lumbar support, OBC

Audi A3 1.9 Sport TDi 130hp

I.G.13, £125 tax (stays the same next year)

6 speed box A/C or electric sunroof, electric sports seats, leather steering wheel, OBC

Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDi Laurin & Klement 110hp

I.G.9, £125 tax (£120 next year)

A/C & electric sunroof, electric leather seats, leather steering wheel, OBC, cruise control, CD multi changer, parking sensors, xenon headlights - its fully loaded, about the only thing it hasn't got is sat nav.

Yes i know i said it was her choice, my only stipulation was it has to be VAG.

(VW Audi Group)

Depends what it's going to be used for. There's a pretty big size and space difference between a Polo and an Octavia?

Yes granted,

it's mainly just to get too and from work (a couple of pretty big and long hills en route)

but she did say she misses the usefulness of the Octavia boot since i bought the Superb, (but i wouldn't trade the legroom for the boot space), she coped with that OK once i fitted parking sensors to it.

Currently she has a Fiesta MK6 which is only 60cm shorter than an Octavia.

spelling

None of the above. Get a Fabia Sport, 1.9 TDi  Mrs Stig loves hers.

First Choice would be the Skoda, 2nd choice the Gttdi Golf

A3. Golf, Octy in that order.

How about

:D

Why change from the fester MK 6, thats a pretty good car and the TDI 110 you're going to have turbo issues where it gums up unless you can find one that's had a recent turbo change/recon at the sort of miles you'll be looking at.

I'd say the polo 100 would be the closest to what you want, but I think you'd be able to stretch into the newer shaped cars for very little extra money due to the very poor market value of used cars at present.

What about a newish seat ibiza TDI also?

The MK I octy is a bit barge like and has very very soft ride, which IMHO would be a huge change from a fiesta.

The A3 is a nice car, but a lot of ££. I don't know if it was based on the MK IV then or not.

If it was me I wouldn't get any of the above as I can think of better cars outside of the VAG group.

She won't ever consider a Fabia again - we looked at them before the Fiesta and she hated the insides of them all, we didn't see a vRS, although the colour of the seats would of put her off straight away.

She wants something with a bit more grunt, which is why she wants a 1.9 TDi, the Fiesta is the 1'4 TDCi and although it can be wound up pretty easily, the way the engine delivers it's power really doesn't suit her driving style.

What are the turbo issues on the 110? does it use the VVT? are you referring to it sticking? if so i thing the blast it will get daily coming home will prevent that?, our old 110 was on about 120K when it was sold, that was the original turbo, it was a MY01, not sure if they changed them towards the end of the MKI's production?

we have found one with high miles on it, but it is black (she doesn't wash the car) and they are a pain to keep clean and looking smart and unfortunately is 60 miles in the opposite direction of all the rest!

Not found one yet she likes, but i will consider one if i do

The MK I octy is a bit barge like and has very very soft ride, which IMHO would be a huge change from a fiesta.

The Fiesta's ride TBH is quite crashy, the ride of the L&K i think would be welcomed,(she liked our MKI Elegance), she doesn't go chucking the car through corners, but does appreciate and use the power to overtake comfortably.

She works in Dover so has to come up the A20 home, anyone who knows this long steep road well knows how busy it can get when the trucks all disembark from the ferry, hence why the bigger engine is required.

I agree you pay a premium just for the badge, I'm not sure if it's based on the MK IV floor plan or not either, the wheelbase and length are both within a couple off mm of the Golf, so maybe?

my first choice would be my furby vrs, then if i had to choose it would be the golf(voted for golf)

I'd probably still say polo as it's got the PD100 and is a low insurance group, which always helps at times like this. I've found VAG cars are always more expensive to insure than a ford in the same group.

FWIW I do know that the power delivery of the 1.4TDCI isn't the same as the PD100, the 1.6 TDCI is closer but no big shunt of torque.

Something that I'd say is worth considering is that there are some very good remaps out there for the 1.4TDCI that make a huge difference to how it drives turning it from something you have to work a bit harder than you'd like to something that has a nice torque curve that's easy to surf so to speak.

I'd say that's probably worth investigating as an option too before you change cars.

Useful comment thanks,

Unfortunately when she decides she 'needs' a newer car, its going to happen, the suggestion of a remap to her would fall on deaf ears (a car is just transport to her, not something to spend money on modifying, even if it improves it, if that spec is 'needed' then her answer would be to buy a std car to that spec)

When i sold my Octavia and bought the Superb she 'had' to have a newer one as well (she had a family owned Fiesta Ghia X, low miles and mint!)

It took a good 12 months for her to admit she should of kept the old Fiesta.

the Octavia would seem the logical choice seeing as she misses the boot space of your old Octavia and it's not actually that much bigger than the current Fiesta overall?

VAG ≠ VW Audi Group

Either the L&K or the Polo, depending largely on whether or not it needs to be capable of longish runs and/or carrying big loads.

Based on the *needs* new car, I'd say the polo then, because while the octy only being 60cm longer doesn't sound much it's just about 2 feet longer, which is a big difference for round town driving etc.

If not the polo then the golf and I'd stay with the PD100 to save on the insurance etc.

I know you said VAG, but it might be worth looking at the Focus 1.6 TDCI as that might be a better match and you can get some really really good prices even on relatively new cars.

Id go for the A3 mate, reasonable size and nice lookin, good stirdy car, and easy for the women to park due to small bum.

I can sort of agree with your mrs on the interior of the MKII Fabia - I kept hitting my hand on the dashboard when changing gear and I don't like the way the plastic juts out. I like the rest of the car otherwise - so if I were to get one I would probably have to saw the annoying jutting out bit off! :D

Octavia no contest.
