Less power = more fun?

Featured Replies

As some of you know, I’ve had a bit of trouble with a generic map and had it taken off and the standard map put back on for now.

I’m actually enjoying the standard car, more than I thought I would. It’s almost like going back to a normally aspirated engine again, as the massive wall of torque isn’t there to whisk me along at silly speeds.

Yes, I know it isn’t as fast now, but the car seems more involving as it isn’t as easy to overtake and therefore a bit more thought has to go into it. Some of you might think this sounds daft, but I really enjoyed the drive to work this morning. I can see situations arising though, where I’ll get frustrated as an opportunity will be missed because of no remap.

I still plan on a remap, either a surge-free generic one from the same chap (if they exist), or if not then a custom map later down the line. Till then, I’ll be happy revving the nuts off a car with ‘only’ 180bhp.:D

Why not uprate the suspension, rear arb and brakes and then realise what you really do have under the bonnet already.

I modded my old quite a bit and enjoyed it, but, if I was starting out all over again with a Mk1 Octy vRS, all I would honestly do is as stated above, as to get it to handle properly in and out of corners is worth another 20bhp on its own.

i find the same when i drive my mums clio as its a much more planned approach to overtakes, focusing much more on keeping more momentum through corners as you cant just pull it back easily again.

certainly good fun but does become irritating though when you cant have the power when you ideally need it.

It depends a bit on how you drive; really the main thing I'd use/need more power for is overtaking, because I already carry about as much energy through corners as I can given sightlines and availabe driver talent!

it is one thing i do need to practice is my corner speeds as im getting lazy now not thinking about the line to carry the speed through all the time and just relying on been able to boot it again, i only ever look at line unless im playing a bit more.

certainly going to be going to some trackdays this year.

Most fun car i've ever driven was my 1.3 Mk2 golf :) Nothing has ever compared to it!

Your all mad!!

Gotta agree less power can be fun, I came from a Rover BRM (about 143bhp) and this was great fun to drive due to the smaller size and equal power to weight as the vRS.

The first post though seems to certainly encourage me to consider a remap (probably a REVO Technik one).

This was the intention for my original route, but the lure of a remap sent me off track. I really wanted to be able to beat a couple of mates with reasonably quick cars and this was, on the face of it, an easy fix.

I'm with you there. However, my happiest motoring moments have been in cars which were fun, rather than outright powerful. The vRS is a great family car, but I can't say it is fun.

I'm tempted to give the vRS to the wife and get a smaller run around for myself - something on the lines of a MK1 Golf GTI, Peugeot 106 Rallye etc - but just can't afford it.

I've had my vRS mapped for over a year now & I can't imagine it with a standard map.

I owened a Clio sport 172 before buying my vRS & I loved it to bits. My friend owned a Scooby STI with the prodrive kit fitted. He took me out in it & I was glad to get back into the Clio. Ok, the STI was extremely quick, but to have some fun in the STI I felt that you needed to be doing neck breaking speeds. The Clio wasn't near as quick, but it always put a smile on my face.

Mine has enough power as standard to make overtakes a lot easier compared to previous cars I've had, but I still need to make sure I have plenty of straight road

remap is out of the question for another year as my insurance is still too high, but may follow the advice of the more venerable ones in the forums and do a few suspension mods etc in the meantime.

Had a lot of fun in my first car which was a 1.6 Fiesta, and that only had 100bhp, but the handling was great...so power isn't everything

I have the best of both worlds, ie a Jabba remap along with their variable boost controller. :D

Same here, and I do find myself every now and again popping the boost to min just so I can go back to full boost and have a bigger smile on my face. Tbh though I have found the full boost is the best for economy, but the min boost is easier to just drive without thinking about having too much power etc to get down.

Me too, Revo with SPS 2. Put it on stock for a long journey a couple of weeks ago when I got home the first thing I did was switch it back to performance mode :D
