Wishbone/bushes

Featured Replies

Yesterday went to get the tracking done (car feels "loose") to be told they couldn't do it until I get the wishbone bushes replaced as they were coming out. Went straight down to the ex dealer I normally use, straight onto the ramp where they said there was nothing wrong:( They would happily replace both wishbones for £280:eek: if I wanted but didn't think it would make any difference. So now I'm a bit baffled as the car still feels loose (edgy on bumps in corners, wanders in a straight line, twitchy under braking), but has nothing wrong. Do I replace the wishbones? replace the rear bushes with TT ones? both? Any other suggestions? The only other odd thing is that at high speed (on my private track of course) I get vibration, possibly from the rear and a bit of judder from the brakes. New tyres 4 months ago and tyre pressures ok.

Help:)

So replace the whole thing or just the bushes. I did a search on how hard it was but all I could find was people saying it was easy - but not how its done. How hard is it to replace the bushes on the car? Or is it a press job off the car:(

Having seen it done to my old Octy vRS, it was an off the car press job.

Had mine replaced with Powerflex, and its a total improvement, well worth it.

I pressed mine out, it was quite a tight fit too.

Yes just replace the pushes

im doin this next month, should be interesting by the sounds of it as ill be doin pretty much all the running gear bushes as well, and fitting new shocks and springs. its gona be a loonnnnnnng weekend

Guess I'll head back to the garage then and get them to fit TT bushes only as I haven't got time at the moment. Thanks everyone.

i think i would definatly make time if it was goin to cost me £280

tried getting quotes from anywhere else?

Thats why I was thinking of having a go myself - still am but I'm short of time at the moment so we'll see

From reading other posts the problem with the standard bushes seems to be the voids in them. What would happen if you filled them with PU or silicone or something? Just wondered if it would be an easy fix?

i dont know for certain but would have thought because they are moving around so much the silicone would unstick itself from the rubber and probably fall out, ideally silicone needs as clean surface to stick to as well so unless uve got a load of cotton buds and oodles of patience

Perhaps the PU then? It certainly sticks.

I did these myself. Not too difficult job, providing you have the tools , vice etc to make up a improvised pressing tool using sockets under and over size to the wishbone bushes. I would give yourself 4 hours for this job.

Make sure you get the tracking checked after if you Diy.

GSF sell complete wishbones (with front and rear bushes) for about £30 each.

Skoda sell them for around £60 each. You get what you pay for, so I'd think that the Skoda bushes are better quality than pattern'd parts.

So you might be able to save some money and hassle by just swapping the whole wishbones over. Only 5 bolts hold them on after all.

Don't forget to change the nut and bolt on the rear mount, the bolt on the front mount, and you may as well replace the ball joint while your at it (including 3 bolts and a backing plate with captive nuts).

rather than ordering new wishbones from say, gsf and it costing u 60 + delivery + vat, why not just get powerflex ones for 70-80

The £30 includes vat (I already added it on), and there's a GSF where I live so no delivery.

I was just highlighting the options. It's a pain in the butt pressing bushes in and out, especially if you don't have all the right tools. So this is a low-stress option.

Also, it's nice having shiney new wishbones!

I was thinking of ordering the £25 wishbones and TT bushes and swapping them before taking the old wishbones off to avoid delays

That's exactly my plan

TT rear bushes and standard front bushes are the way forth
