i thought these days the electric kits (assuming you're just using a normal towbar electrics socket) used a bypass relay so the flasher unit itself isn't affected.

something like http://www.towingelectrics.com/relays_bypass.php

I just fitted the towbar and used those nasty scotch-block connectors to connect into the loom. There is a seperate box for driving the indicators and making an annoying beeping sound when ou use your indicators. No need to upgrade the relay in my car.

Cheers for the replies guys :)

MIne was dealerfitted to the estate at the time, not sure if that used scotchlock connectors but it also had the beepy thing going on - it isnt half loud either in mine.

Mine is a genuine tow bar and it has a dedicated wiring kit with a blue flasher relay box which ticks like a standard flasher unit. I think that if a relay box isn't fitted there is more chance of the flasher relay burning out.

If you look on www.towsure,co.uk you can buy the flasher units and what you nrrd at afraction of manufacturers prices.

Whereabouts does the relay lurk?? Is it under the bonnet??

The indicator relay is behind the hazard switch on the dash. The trailer relay is in my rear storage compartment in the boot (estate), next to the CD changer, as that is where I scotchlock into the wiring loom for my towbar electrics. My OEM kit has a box which has additional relay for the indicators, plus a really LOUD beeper.
