Octy facelift, Golf mkV1 or A3

Featured Replies

Probably a daft question to ask on a dedicated Skoda forum but with regard to the 1.4 turbocharged petrol 122bhp which of the three would you go for?

Not sure.. they're all much of a muchness... drive each one, find out for yourself :)

The one you get the best deal on. Guess that excludes the A3.

For looks I think the golf mk6 is the best looking, if that matters to you - guess that varies from person to person though.

in the 1.4 turbocharged petrol 122bhpl i would go for the A3.

I'd go for the Golf if you can get a good enough discount. It's a much nicer car than the mk5 was.

You will always get more for your money with a Skoda, but if you're going to be a badge snob get the Golf ;)

Depends heavily on personal circumstances and what you want/need a car for. All I do know is that the new 1.4 TSi is reported to be a cracker of an engine so whichever you choose you'll be happy with the powerplant

The Golf is nice but with any near Skoda leaves of kit on 1.4 Elegance you will be looking at £17k on Golf! That is if VW are not doing any deals.... Also the Skoda is a bit bigger boned, eg you get a bit bigger car more like the Golf Plus than Golf. The down side is the Golf is little quieter than Skoda, but that can be solved be spending a £100 or so on some sound damping pads to go under the carpets. Also some companies and people from reviews and surveys say the Octavia is better built than the VW or even Audi's, built by people that take pride and care.... Also the VW logo carries a snob value in people eyes which may not be want you want, eg people think you too rich!

I went for the Skoda over the Golf as a bigger and for the reasons above

pffft, a vw is a poor mans audi

no, audi is a posers vw

Golf was around long before the A3 ;)

The real car expert Honest John has a road test of the Golf with new 1.4 TSI unit:

Road Tests: VW Golf Mk VI

He seems to like it... waiting for face lifted Skoda test by him

Had a short test drive in the new MkV1 Golf 1.4 TSi DSG 122bhp and must say it is quite an amazing power plant and transmission. Very responsive and very torquey, it was difficult to grasp that there was only a 1.4 under the bonnet. Even at 30mph the latest 7 speed DSG was showing 7th gear on the dash's indicator information, no wonder its economy is so good for a petrol.

It bodes well for the equivalent new Octy. - once its available????

Octy facelift would be better and i don,t think you will get a MK6 Golf cheap.

Plus there is a price increase of over 3% from today!! :thumbdwn:

I went for an Octy vRS over a Golf mkV GTi

Got over the badge issue and just felt it was more car for less money. No regrets.

If you don't need the added practicality of the Octavia I would get the Golf.

I suppose the Golf is the most modern platform. It's more expensive than the Octy but will probably hold its value longer to cancel that out.

The Octy is bigger with more kit than than the Golf or Audi.

The Octy seems to be pretty reliable, my fault list is still at zero after nearly 2 years.

Father-in-laws Audi A3 has had a few snags (nothing big) and he's not impressed with the dealers in general. the Golf is a brand new model and is bound to have some teething troubles.

I'd test the Golf and the Octy and make the choice from there. For me the Audi is too expensive for what you get.

A few years ago wife had a A3, which I did not like. It drove well, steering to light, but room inside was compromised. So I opted for the Golf GTI DSG which fro me, fits real snugly.

Comes down to personal pref as both cars will drive much of a muchness, but local dealer support may be a different kettle of fish, thus worth consideration!

We were recently in the same situation (but looking at 4 -5 year old cars)

Octavia = loads more spec and room for your money

Golf (MK5) = nicer drive than the Octy, but with less spec

A3 - didn't even view them in the end as the spec were much lower (for the same money) than the others.

In the end we went for the Golf, as the car was for SWMBO and she felt the Octavia was too big - despite us having one before!

.

I wouldn't exactly call the MK6 brand new, it's a face lifted MK5.

you would be suprised with the many changes on the MK6. It is a much better car than MK5.

I am aware of (most of) the improvements, but it still doesn't make it a brand new model, what they have done is tweaked all (hopefully) of the problems the MK5 had.

Looks alot better anyway. I never liked the Mk5's, although the taillights on the Mk6 look wrong.

btw and out of topic, i have been told from friend who worksfor peugeot, that that MK5 GTI is giving lots of problems unlike the MK4GTI who was/is very reliable...

Rubbish:D An Audi and a Golf are the poor man's Skoda. Who in their right mind spends more to get less?
