Stamping Service Books

Featured Replies

Easily answered by someone in the trade i'm sure but:

To legally put a stamp in a service book following work carried out what is required?

My Fabia log book has stamps right up until now when its due to 40k service and cam belt change. SWMBO's cousin is a VW trained mechanic who is going to carry the work out for beer tokens in his garage (as the new VW dealer he's moved to won't let him use the workshop like his old VW Commercial Vehicles one did! :thumbdwn:)

He has told me that he is able to fill in details of all the work, leave receipts etc but could i not just get a stamp made saying "A Nonymous Motor Services" and stamp the book?

Guessing it'd be fraud of some description and was probably rife a few years back but can anyone confirm?

Thanx

Cliff

A stamp and/or or signature in the service log means that the legal entity making the mark is certifying that the required works have been done to the required standard. As long as he actually does the work, your outlaw would be competent to make that mark.

Does that answer your question?

I agree with Ken, a stamp from a non VAT registered company will affect the warranty (if there is any left) otherwise, get a stamp made up with whatever you like, the only time it can classed as fraud is if you get the stamp made up with someone else's details on it.

Nothing stopping you having (for example) 'PastyBoy, independent VAG servicing' etc on it

Thanks Both

I can kind of see the worry if it was all main dealer stamps with one dodgy signature on the largest service, but the car has been through 5 owners before me and stamps are from all over the country and from both Skoda dealers and independents so i didn't really see the problem; and i don't plan on selling the car for a fair few years yet!

Just wanted to make sure the plod weren't gunna come knocking should i get a stamp made up

Although not sure what kind of infraction i would have commited to warrant a search of my cars service book!!

It's not a legal document in any sense and of no interest whatever to the police or VOSA. You could chuck it away for all they care.

The only way you could get into trouble would be if the stamp or written entry claimed to show work that hadn't actually been done in order to inflate the value of the car.

Why not just get him to sign it?

If I was buying your Fabia I'd be less disturbed by seeing an 'honest' home service in the book than by seeing a 'fake' stamp without any V.A.T. details etc.

I've just serviced my Octy myself after 6 years of main dealer stamps. I will just write the service details in the book. I intend to keep it a while yet & at the age it'll be when I sell I think condition will influence any buyer way more than the service book.

LOL Outlaw!!!!

But I agree with whats said here. I get my car serviced by my mechanic (he doesnt have a stamping thing) but I keep a record on my PC and the service book to record what was done, when and at what mileage.

Also if a cars serviced by a main dealer/modern garage if you did a HPI check you'd be able to see this online.

Thanks all

I wasn't that really bothered as i trust him to do the work but via his VW garage contact the previous books have been stamped and even the "outlaw" :) himself said "i can do the work but won't be able to stamp the book" which made me ask the question.

I did suggest gettign some sort of comedy stamp made up with a picture of a fabia or love hearts or lighting flash or "Briskoda wuz 'ere" but she was suitably unimpressed!

Signature it is then and details it is then
