Buying Skoda Felicia

Featured Replies

Hello fellow Skud fans!!

Iam going to look at a 1997 Skoda Felicia with 50,000 on the clock on Monday and was wondering what i should be on the look out for!?

Got full service history....it's going for £1000

Any tips??

Thanks

1K seems a bit much for a 97 felly. Even if it does have full service history and 50k miles. I'd say at most 800 if it's a very good example. Don't beleive any sales spiel about it being a rebranded vw polo as it isn't.

double what it's worth

It certainly looks like a nice example

Things to check for

50k miles on the 1.6......... see if the MOT/Documents verify this. my 98S had 70k when I bought it (£745 in 2006), head gasket popped at 112k (Dec 2008) (but thats another story)

Popular rust spots wheel arches and boot lid.

Cambelt change will be every 60k miles

On the services see if ther'es a history as to what was done (plug change at 40k miles)

Doesnt matter if there isnt but it helps to know!

Check the heater works fully and that the PAS isjnt noisey when turning lock to lock.

Check the sunroof doesnt leak

And check how the clutch feels.

I think thats about it.

You could prob get a HPI/RAC check for a fiver (might be more now)

As Anewman says dont believe the "It's a VW Polo underneath"

It's a rounded Favorit with a VW Engine (the 1.3 is the Skoda engine)

Don't let that put you off. Thgse things are cheap, cheerful and tough!

It's way overpriced. The more recent models have the Octavia type front grille. You could get air con and passenger air bags on a more recent model for less. My water pump and thermostat conked out at around 50K and the cam belt was changed at the same time.

and that the PAS isjnt noisey when turning lock to lock.

the glx ones don't all have PAS.

it's too expensive i'd say, mine was £275 although this one does look to be in quite good nick... agree with the above posts, check for rust round the rear arches and tailgate but don't let that put you off

There are bound to be loads about.

Go see a view, milage shouldnt matter as long as they are well kept and maintained.

No price is set in stone so feel free to make offers too.

Whats the MOT/Tax like on this one.

£185 per year for tax

Way too expensive, £600 tops

If it's got an MOT they're probably ok but look at the front suspension struts. Both of mine needed these replacing - the cup that supports the bottom of the spring rusts through. If they are thin you may see them starting to bend under the car's weight but two of mine just gave up and you end up with the bottom of the spring resting on the tyre. Give them a good prod and pick at any flaking paint.

I'll have to push my bartering skills to the limit then.....arrrrgghhhh!!

Will try my best!!!

is it your first car?

look at this one

If you really must spend a grand on one have a peek at that.

But then again some places charge mopre than others. Theres a Favorit for sale near me £500 was marked at £600

Here it is

You can buy mine for a grand of you want :D

2000 X Reg, 1.3MPI engine, 55,000 miles, some service history, MOT til September, Tax til April, good condition (could do with a clean tbh), silver, power steering, cassette player lol it does pickup KISS radio if you're in my age group it could be nice, no knocks or noises. Only problem is the left rear door won't open and is permanantly locked... Which is better than being permanantly open I guess.

Wanna buy? £1000 ovno for you

That looks nice!

Very clean and tidy.

Could no doubt knock him down on the price too!

Also don't forget to check the suspension struts... these are prone to rusting on the lower cup thingamies!

Unless my eyes are playing up, the front panel is all smashed in!! Also, it's far too much for a pre faclift model!, You could get a mint facelifted model for £1,000 without the dented front panel, walk away from it

Paul

My 1.6 is for sale. It's under the Cars For Sale section of the forum.

Hi all,

Newbie here with a similar question about buying a Felicia,

Looking for a cheap runaround for getting to work and maybe the odd trip oop-north to see family etc. Have first refusal on a P Reg Felicia LXi in reasonable nick with 101,000 on the clock, apart from a shed load of stone chips on the front and two bodged rear arch repairs, underside looks pretty good from what I can see, interior is clean, Exhaust looks almost new has 4 new tyres and has a full 12 months MOT on it, my mate only wants £200 for it.

Just want to see what you Experts? think about the price and do I need to worry about the timing chain? I hope i'm correct saying that as I have read elsewhere that the 1.3 doesnt have a cambelt and I sure as hell wouldnt like to be hit with the expense of a new one any time soon.

Haven't had a test drive for myself in it yet but seems to run ok, will of course take it out myself before i make the final decision. Also the car doesnt have much in the way of history so i dont really know how its been driven so clutch wear could be a problem and with all those stone chips it may have been ragged for a while, though I know the guy who owns it drives it down a few dirt tracks to take the dogs out so may be to do with that.

would be grateful for a/some speedy replies

You're correct the 1.3 doesn't have a cambelt so you don't have to worry about that, although the chains can stretch over time, but you'd hear that. For £200 with 12 months MOT I'd say you should be fairly safe, for a year, by the sound of it the arches may mean it is only a one year car.

I'd have a look on the autotrader and ebay as Felicias seem to pop up quite a bit.

Def sounds like a ooooh should i buy........

On the other hand take a look at the Favorit.

I got really lucky and bagged one for £150. Swapped the wheels with my former Felicia.

The odd rust patch here and there, had about 47k miles now on 53k but bodywork in good shape.

Interior could do with a real good valet but a nice car for a bargain bucket price.

It needed a new clutch cable DIY fix as scavenged from my dead Felicia.

For the MOT it needed a CV boot gaitor and steering gaitor

The fuel pump just died!!

Apart from that it's very reliable!!

Just dont expect luxuries as it's a proper drivers car. The driver does everything manually :D

Out of interest did you have to take the big cylindrical weight thing off the gearbox end of the felicia clutch cable? (Standard fav cable doesn't come with one).

Didn't half get lucky, I was looking at that car myself, just didn't have a clutch cable to hand :P.

Too true. Been a bit of a shock going back to a Felicia as an everyday car from an Octy II vRS, although I do still have remote central locking :D.

so what say you all? Do you think I should go for it? Even if it only lasts a year it seems reasonable value.

:confused::confused::confused::confused:

Damned right I was really lucky!!!

That dangly thing?

I found a pic on my PC and just enlarged it a tad.

Hi Tricksta, sorry didn't notice your earlier post. £200 for a felicia with 12 months MOT should be a good buy. The cam chains do tend to stretch and get noisy, but it's generally noise and probably won't need replacing. Main thing to look out for is the rusty spring cups issue described in the sticky thread at the top of this forum.

If the car drives ok, and you're happy with it then go for it..
