Fabia 1, VRS electrical (?) fault

Featured Replies

We had a 54 reg VRS that was entirely trouble free, covering 20K miles p.a. Just before Christmas we part-exchanged it for an 06 model that has plagued us with a power-sterring fault. Intermittently, the power steering fails whilst driving along and occasionally other warning lights are seen. It is clearly unroadworthy because if the fault happened under certain circumstances, it would be difficutl or even impossible to avoid an accident. It's been back to the dealer (Telford in Carlisle) three times now, twice invoking Skoda roadside assistance. Whilst Telfords have been helpful, replacing the power steering pump and more, the fault contiues to reappear and has done so for the last three days.

What options do you think we have here?

Welcome,

Intermittent faults are the hardest to trace, especially if no fault codes are logged. Normally I would say the steering angle sensor was causing the problem, but if you are getting other warning lights, it sounds more like a general wiring, or ECU problem.

Have you tried testing the PAS at night, and checked to see if the headlights flicker excessively (some flicker is normal). A common fault is alternator sense wire, causing poor battery charging. The PAS pump can take 60AMPS and if the battery is not getting fully charged, it can cause all sorts of faults due to low power problems from the battery.
