Scratched alloys

Featured Replies

I have had two new tyres fitted. After washing the car I noticed scratch marks close to the edge of the wheel. It looks like the wheels were clamped to something without any kind of padding.

Up to now the garage have been very good. I don't know if the scratches can be polished out or anything like that.

What can I expect the garage to do about this?

Thanks

go back and point out the problem, i think its safe to say they caused it and as a result id be inclined to suggest to them its there duty to sort it out

I'd imagine that they will deny causing it and you've not got a leg to stand on.

The only way to protect yourself from this is to do a joint inspection with the fitter before and agree any pre-existing damage, and then do a further inspection afterwards before driving away.

When changing a tyre, the outside of the wheel is not clamped to anything. The only thing that gets close to the tyre/wheel is the large metal device thats used to pull the tyre off the rim. Only thing I can think of is this has made contact with the wheel causing the damage.

Take it back to them and see what they say, however as already mentioned they may deny it was them saying it was already there before they started.

Back last summer I had three out my 4 wheels ruined by tyre fitting. They admitted guilt and got a mobile alloy refurb man in, who I must say was brilliant. The garage loaned me a car while mine was done [only a morning's work] and of course all was free. Would have cost £38 per wheel apparently.

Garage don't know what happened to alloys. Car booked in to be fixed next Monday.

Faith in garage intact.

Thanks

I'd definitely do that in future, even though the people I used agreed with me it was their fault. All the scratches were circular and parallel with the rim, and the same distance in from the rim - about 1.5". Nothing that kerbing would do. I was lucky the owner thought I wasn't the sort to make this up and he went and ranted at the fitter! (Who looked about 12 and as if he'd started doing this kind of work that morning!)

Kwack Fit scratched my 18" vRS alloy last October, right around the circumference. They claimed it couldn't have been them but offered a local repair which I declined as I was away from home when the tyres were changed.

I ended up getting the wheel repaired at their cost and now always get the fitter and the centre manager to agree the condition of any wheel prior to them starting work.

As mine is a co. car I'm restricted to the big nationwide type places :(
