Wheel bolt sheared off wifes scenic

Featured Replies

Had two tyres fitted a couple of weeks ago to SWMBO's Scenic. I was on the driveway yesterday as she pulled up in it and could hear something rattling around.

I forgot about it til today and i removed the hub cap thing from the middle of the alloy and there was a sheared off bolt floating around in there.

So what should i do now? Take it back to the tyre fitting place?

or try and remove the rest of the bolt myself somehow and get a new one??

I don't know where you stand on this. I myself would take it back.

I must state that where I get my tyres from - they always state that I check my wheel nuts after a few miles and to take it steady ect.

Do you still have the receipt?

Probably caused by a monkey with a nut gun!

Take it back, get them to replace the bolt and torque the bolts up correctly - that does not mean as tight as the nut gun will go!

I had the wheels off SHMBO's new (to her) Golf last week, one broken Snap-On socket later, god they were tight!

I think if you had done it the same day then yes, but leaving it a fortnight they will just

show you the door.

The best thing to do is just remove the broken stud by drilling it out and get a new one, cost of about 50p

Whilst your at it, check the torque on the remaining bolts. You dont want another one breaking under stress of being to tight.

Was they changed at kwik fit?

Was changed at a local place called Savoy Tyres, not sure if they have them all over the country.

TBH when they did it they did not use a gun to do the bolts back up, just a wheel wrench.

I do have the receipt, SWMBO is going to take it in tomorrow. I think part of the bolt is still stuck out of the hub so may not need drilling out.

I know what you are saying about it being two weeks but we only do about 5k a year at the most in it and apart from a trip to london straight after the tyres where fitted the car has probably only done a couple of hundred miles if that.

I have checked the three remaining bolts and they all seem secure. Told her to take it very steady when she takes it in tomorrow. Its only about half a mile down the road.

The tyre fitter I use always tightens the wheel bolts with a torque wrench. I thought all tyre fitters had to tighten the bolts with torque wrenches.

I always tighten my wheel bolts with the wrench supplied with the car, and retighten them if necessary after one journey... I do them up hand-tight so I know I can undo them in the event of me needing to change a wheel on the roadside.

:iagree: - the standard wheel nut wrench supplied with a car is normally designed so that you achieve the required torque by doing the nuts up without straining,

For the OP, you'd have to prove the bolt was over-torqued. If there's even a hint of an old break there, the most the fitter's done is break something that was going to break anyway.

Wheel nuts snap if too tight!!!

That's right. If you tighten them with a torque wrench you'll find the standard wrench will undo them with firm pressure.

Well i can report that the wife took the car back and they sorted it our no problem.

Removed what was left of the old bolt and replaced it with a new one.

I checked them and they seem ok.

All's well that ends well hopefully.
