New AP coilovers coming - sensible drop amount?

Featured Replies

Haviing been advised on the last MOT with N/S/F top mount play, and last week the O/S/F spring snapping! I have now decided to get AP coilovers fitted by Awesome in a few weeks, as this is seems the best time to do it. I was wondering what is the best amount to drop it by on OE 17" spider wheels? I don`t want to go too low to cause problems with ride, and speed bumps etc. Also I guess it`ll drop more slightly after a few weeks of settling in(5mm?) I was thinking of 30mm maybe, what do you think?

be interested to know what u do mate...but i reckon awesome will have a setting in mind ...they know their stuff. Ill be goin Ap's to.

Yeah, I guess Awesome will have a tried setting. I will post back views when they are fitted.

You will not get a 30mm drop from the AP's as the 50mm drop is from a standard octy and the VRS is 25mm lower so max you will only get 25mm.

go with 25mm mate thats what mines at give you just enough that you dont bottom out to often:D

if you have a cupra r spoiler good luck:rofl:

So it looks like 25mm max then! No LCR front splitter fitted...and probably won`t now ;)

I went 30mm drop then back up to around 25mm to give slightly better height to avoid rubbing. Although I have people in the back and a front splitter. My set up are weitecs, the fitting and coilover set up is the same as AP. My adjustment is only midway so could go a lot lower if i wanted.

Thanks for that Bowders1, as Sarah said, the stance is just right! Your pics have just decided it -25mm it is:)

I know I`ll soon start looking for 18" wheels now though:worried:

Is the standard front ARB and droplinks OK with a 25mm drop then?

Or do you need shorter links?

Thing is with the weitecs they lower 65mm same as the kw's.

If you want -25mm then you will need to run the Ap's at there lowest setting like i have and the ride on the front on bumpy roads is bouncy at times which you may not like for a daily as i use mine only for weekends if that so does not bother me.

Had the kw v1 on my other vrs ans to be honest if you want to go -25mm save up for the weitec as the ride is much better.

Raise mine by 10mm front and 20mm back and you have the AP ride height at the lowest setting.

Drop links are fine on mine at -35mm

Bowders - are they the GT Weitecs or the TX ones?

Bowders - are they the GT Weitecs or the TX ones?

They are GT Weitecs, and are actually Seat Leon Cupra R ones, as the poundages was better for me(i think you can make out the part numbers in the pics). 1020kilos verses the 1000 for Skoda Octavia option.

Like Monkey Boy states Weitec (Like KW) do allow more drop than the AP version, so I guess I can't comment on how AP's would be effected being any lower.

I don't find the ride in mine uncomfortable, although I came from FSD's and HR's down. If you were going from standard ride height you may find it solid:) But boy is it a tighter turn and drive.. I love it

Bodge - Yep standard ARB and droplinks.

This thread has decided it(especiially your pics Bowders1) I have dug a little deeper now, and phoned Awesome this morning to change the suspension choice from AP to Weitec as I drive the car every day. Can`t come soon enough now, thanks for this, it has been most useful:)

Glad to be of some help. You will not be dissapointed. Superb kit at the price. Just remember to cover the weitecs in grease so to stop corroson in the shocks where the spring platforms go. (see pics). Most coilovers suffer from this.

Yeah, noticed that in the pics, will get them well coated;)

Just out of curiousity how is the back height adjusted? I can clearly see how the fronts go up or down in Bowders pics but can't work out the rear.

If they are the same as the KW's, then there is a collar that the spring sits in on the rear beam, and that you rotate with a "C" spanner either way to raise or lower the rear ride height.

Virtually the same collar as the fronts have, but on the fronts they are half way up the strut.

Cheers Gerry

I was studying the pictures and couldn't see any obvious way. All this talk of coilovers is getting me tempted........must resist :D, though I think I'll upgrade the front and rear arb's at some point this year and see how that feels.

Re the ARB's, on the rear I had the Neuspeed 28mm adjustable rear arb, and raved about it, as it totally transformed the car.

I never bothered about the front and kept the standard one, as to fit a heavier one than the oem one to the front quite often increases understeer.

I figured that to go so heavy on the back without balancing the front might make it a little tail happy in the wet, is this not the case then?

Same as Gerry States. You can't see them as the whiteline rear ARB mounts are hiding them.

Here is a better pic.

You can make out the under plate that bolts up to hold the spring adjuster platform

Here you can see a side shot of the spring sitting on the adjuster.

They are adjusted as per the front ones.

Cheers for the extra pics

Very helpful mate thank you.

With the Neuspeed rear ARB being adjustable, you have the choice as to how soft or hard you want the rear end.

Mine was set on the middle position of the three and was brilliant, as several who drove it will confirm, totally neutral with no under or oversteer.

Put it into a roundabout a bit too quick in the damp, and if it was going to break traction, it just went into a perfect four wheel, easily correctable slide.

Gerry , you will never grow old ;)

Just looking at that pic.....

Is that a Whiteline ARB painted green?
